A naval confrontation occurred near Atlantic City as rum runners in five vessels tried to land on the New Jersey coast. Government boats fired at dawn after surrounding the flotilla, but the smugglers escaped in fog, leaving no captures. The attack marked a second landing attempt in a week.
Washington D D C June 16 The weather outlook for the week beginning Monday covers the upper Mississippi and lower Missouri river valleys. Considerable cloudiness with occasional showers. Warm first half and cooler latter half of the week.
Three hundred Chinese coal miners died at Tsiochwang when soldiers cut power to stop the pumps. The disaster occurred in China’s second largest mine, owned and operated by Chinese with two German workers on site installing new machinery.

Great Falls Montana June 16 Shelby cow town will stage the heavyweight title bout between Jack Dempsey and Tom Gibbons on July 4 after local promoters secured a new 100000 dollar installment. George Stanton president of Stanton Trust and Savings bank agreed to advance 50000 dollars to garant the balance with mayor Jim Johnson backing the effort. A separate offer from New York matchmaker Tom O Rourke proposed staging the bout at Polo Grounds on July 2 if Shelby could not proceed.
Alexander Stamboulisky, former Bulgarian premier, unaware of the danger while in Slavovitza, was killed when a cavalry ambush captured his carriage near Slavovitza. He fled toward the village but an attack by peasants ended in his death as troops attempted to move him to safety.

June 16. A fifteen month old child of Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Hall living near Redfield died after the child pulled a box of matches onto a crib, igniting a fatal fire. The tragedy occurred last night, with investigators noting mischief from the matches as the likely cause.
In Charles City Iowa a barn fire killed a two year old boy. Fire was started by his two older brothers under five who were left with a haymow blaze. An aunt rescued two children while the parents were away. The child died likely from matches.
