A Crawfordsville man Morris Eugene Johnson, 24, was killed when his van truck veered off a county road one mile south of Packwood. He was trapped in the wreck, and the crash occurred about 3:30 a.m. Johnson was alone at the time of the incident.
The driver license examiner and crew will operate from the Washington County courthouse basement on Wednesday during usual hours while other offices close. People seeking licenses or renewals should report during the usual hours in the courthouse basement.
SUBIC BAY Philippines a naval officer in charge of the USS Frank E Evans during a collision with an Australian carrier refused to testify before a board of inquiry without full constitutional rights. The officer contends rights are being denied as the inquiry proceeds.
Rockefeller arrives in Brasilia meeting Costa e Silva and Aleixo and other Brazilian leaders in what diplomats call a major stop of his tour. Police posted 1200 to keep order as leaflets urged demonstrations in Rio while Brazil’s aid program, once large, was trimmed after authorities seized broader powers. Rockefeller plans trips to Sao Paulo then to Uruguay and Paraguay.
The House Ways and Means Committee voted to repeal the 7 percent investment tax credit for business investments and extend the income tax surcharge. It also approved a one year extension of federal excise taxes of 10 percent on telephone calls and 7 percent on automobiles, with plans to extend the surtax later. Rep. Hale Boggs said there was no doubt about it. The measure would repeal the investment tax credit effective April 20, 1969, without exceptions for small business or pollution equipment, ending a $3 billion annual subsidy for new equipment purchases.
UPI reports Montgomery Rendezvous offensive near Hamburger Hill in A Shau Valley, with a claimed 106 Communists killed and U.S. losses of 21 dead and 130 wounded. The operation, involving a multi battalion 101st Airborne unit, follows Apache Snow and spans three fourths of South Vietnam with clashes around the DMZ and Saigon outskirts.

Remaining 400 Marines to Iwakuni Japan. About 1,200 Navy personnel to board ships. 8,000 Army troops slated for return to the continental United States. Includes 2,000 Army reservists and Guardsmen. Inactivation set for 2nd Brigade of the 9th Division. 1st Brigade will remain with division HQ in Hawaii. National Guard and reserve units named for inactivation.
Senator Edward M. Kennedy argues against ending conscription after Vietnam, warning it could widen the rift between the military and civilians. He backs George Reedy's call for a major draft overhaul, including a lottery for 19 year olds and reform of local draft boards to curb perceived bias.

Epstein reports three tree species in Iowa, including sycamores and white oaks, suffer health problems this spring and summer due to a fungus that thrives in cool temperatures. He cites pruning, fertilizing, spraying, and destroying diseased leaves and branches as remedies.
