Fort Worth City Council asked Water Superintendent Uel Stephens to act with more diplomacy after a councilman cited a complaint about low water pressure. An employee allegedly told a resident to fill buckets to tide her over during low periods.
The Washington YWCA announces a summer program with swimming and tennis, hiring Dorothy Smith, Betty Logan, Jeanette Choate and Pauline Crone to run activities. Highlights include an August Lake Darling camp for girls ages seven to junior high, weekly Lake Darling trips, a Burlington train ride for older children, Birney farm day, star gazing in August, and tennis and swim schedules for multiple grade levels.
Phil Kneen and Bing Miler vie for president of the Washington Jaycee chapter as the annual election set for Monday night June 21. Retiring president William Perdock heads a slate that also includes Leon Hillman Bob Robertson J Resehis John Phleger Dick Richards Dale Doggett Paul Harvey Don Reve Carl Dalle Meyer Charles Croft for the other officer posts.
New York Governor Thomas E. Dewey will retire from public life at the end of his current term. The New York Times reports the decision is definite and irrevocable, with no formal announcement expected in the next week or two. Dewey has ruled out any federal office under Eisenhower.
President Syngman Rhee announced a plan for Korean unification and signaled U S approval, while denying details. He said no more conferences with the Communists and ordered South Korea’s Pyun Yung Tae to return from Geneva as talks stalled.
Lack of funds forces the discontinuation of the nursing aides training program. Mrs Mayme Squire, a teacher with the state committee on the training of nursing aides, announced the program would end at a meeting in Des Moines on June 14. Seven Iowa organizations sponsored the effort to relieve nurse shortages, hoping to resume soon.
Flint Journal editor Michael A. Gorman rebutted Red Cross chair Roland Harriman who accused Flint of not aiding itself in 1955. Gorman cited $5.22 million in losses with $2.55 million insured and $590 thousand aid. he praised Flint’s Red Feather fund and disaster response as equitable and immediate. Harriman warned nationwide giving could falter if cities refuse help received.
Authorities said a farm quarrel led to a Dubuque county shooting injuring Joseph Boge and Ambrose Steffen. Joseph and Ambrose were hospitalized in fair condition. Cletus Boge was jailed on an open charge as the county attorney noted a quarrel over farm shares sparked the incident.
The Junior Chamber of Commerce honored three Iowa cities Fort Madison Mason City and Algona at its annual convention in Colorado Springs Fort Madison topped 25 000 to 100 900 group for youth welfare and won a traffic safety award Mason City led in the same category for national security Algona won a first in the under 10 000 group for city wide international relations program.
Senator McCarthy accuses Democrats of goading Army Secretary Stevens into the Army McCarthy row as hearings drag on and turn personal. Mundt scolds Stevens for consulting a Democratic lawyer last winter. Dirksen cites Communist infiltration under Democratic rule, while McCarthy and Jackson clash over loyalty disclosures. Contempt test urged to bar loyalty information to Congress.
French high command reports one division of 8 000 to 10 000 Viet Minh regulars infiltrated the heart of the Red River delta defenses about 50 miles south of Hanoi. They join Vo Nguyen Giap’s 100 000 strong force as patrols clash in the delta amid new tactics.
West Berlin crowds beat Soviet sector youths attempting to disrupt a mass meeting outside City Hall. Police reported 15 Czechoslovak? and three officers injured as arrests were made. The clash occurred during ceremonies honoring the June 17 anti Communist uprising.
Torrential rains broke a heat wave and caused flash floods in the East while the Midwest faced extreme heat. Ohio and Pennsylvania reported rapid rises in streams, with Steubenville drenched and Cameron’s business district flooded. Rescue efforts followed a lightning strike in South Fayette Township near Pittsburgh.
John W. Long, 69, life-long Wyman resident, died at his home Wednesday. Survivors include his wife and four children Raymond, John, Kenneth, and Mary. Funeral arrangements are pending at Barton's Funeral Home in Winfield.
United Nations security council faces a Friday vote on Thailand’s request for peace observers to monitor Indochina. U S ambassador Lodge backs the Thai plan, noting urgency, with Thailand seeking authorization to enter only with consent of governments involved. Britain New Zealand Turkey and Brazil support.
France blocks an immediate end to the Geneva peace conference by proposing a nine nation commission to study cease fire control in Laos Cambodia and Viet Nam and address related settlement issues. The plan follows Bidault talks with Red China and the Soviet Union and a reported Chou En-lai offer viewed as a temporary salvage.
Earl Southard, 65, a corn farmer, was reported in serious condition at home after a tornado threw his car into a water filled ditch. He and his wife were driving near their Marshalltown home when trapped in the car for about an hour.

Mr and Mrs Glen Shafer visited Sunday in the Delmer Rhode beck home South English. Mr and Mrs Rey Eshelman learned their son Pte Alwa Eshelman stationed in Korea had just returned from Japan. Mr and Mrs Max Baldosier and family visited Sunday in the parental Dave Baldosier home. Mr and Mrs Carl Amrine and son Harold spent Sunday with John Wieneke Sro and daughter Sarah.
Two Louisa County men traveled to Des Moines for induction into the armed forces. Daniel D. Call of Columbus City and David T. McCulley of Columbus Junction volunteered, with the event noted in Columbus Junction on June 15.
Weather forecast from the Des Moines Weather Bureau indicates cooler conditions and weekend relief after today’s warmth and scattered storms. River observers note minor flooding on the Iowa River near Marshalltown and on the Des Moines River downstream, with crest readings around 11 to 16 feet and forecast rises of about a half foot at several sites.
