In Chicago courts during spring practice a deputy sheriff tackled two brothers on trial for murder as they attempted to flee. In a separate chamber another deputy used a body block on an accused robber who walked out without permission.
Army special counsel Joseph N. Welch showed McCarthy signed G David Schine s application for an Army commission. McCarthy denied knowledge while Welch produced the original and a photo copy, prompting laughter as Schine is central to the hearings now in their fifth day.
Washington county offices will be closed Friday June 18 as all county officials and deputies attend a school of instruction in Des Moines on that date.
Union painters said they would set up picket lines at several Davenport schools to protest the hiring of a non union firm to wash walls at two schools on a low bid. They said the district unfairly favors non union labor as they continue work across three buildings under a contract worth 12132.
Forest Walker of Washington and Dro Miller of Wellman attend the national American Red Cross convention ending today in Los Angeles. The two men are delegates from the Washington county Red Cross chapter. Mrs Walker accompanied her husband and Mr Miller’s wife also joined the trip.
Wellman firefighters battled a large barn fire on the Ralph Gingerich farm eight miles northwest of Wellman Tuesday night. The blaze, reported at 8 30 pm, destroyed the barn completely while another nearby building was saved. Cause unknown but suspected to be from a refrigerator.
Rain measured three quarters of an inch in Washington with a heavy morning shower and later showers. South of the city reports indicate over an inch in places like Wayland and Crawfordsville. In Coppock area strong winds hail caused damage to Charles Davison farm including blown tops, broken windows, hail torn plants, and a partially torn down building. No one was home when the structure collapsed.
The Veterans Memorial Auditorium cornerstone was laid in Des Moines in a brief ceremony. The five million dollar building will seat 15 000 for conventions public gatherings and sporting events and is due to be ready by January 1. Voters approved two bond issues to finance construction begun December 1 1952. The project is a living memorial to Des Moines servicemen.
National Geographic Society notes Queen Victoria helped popularize preserved ginger from China. The pungent candied spice was a novelty in her era and tradition holds she served it at state banquets.
William A. Bender known as the green mask bandit broke from Macoupin County Jail taking a machine gun and automatic pistol. He fled in a stolen car, wrecked near Standard City, and forced George Caufield to drive him before releasing him. Authorities warned motorists as roadblocks spread across central Illinois and suspected he headed toward Chicago.
Dessie Belle Warner 75 died at 12606 East Second Street at 12:40 a.m. after six months of illness. Funeral 2:30 p.m. Friday in Jones funeral home with Rev Karl Longfellow officiating. Burial Elo Grove cemetery. Born Nov 24, 1880 in Eureka neighborhood, Washington County. Survived by husband Rena A Warner four children and eight grandchildren plus six great grandchildren. One son Clifford and daughter Lola predeceased.
Senate Republican Leader William F Knowland predicted passage of a one year extension to the reciprocal trade program after a couple days of debate. The Finance Committee moved the measure to the floor without hearings as Democrats threaten a possible substitution of the president's three year plan.
The Clinton Bridge Commission awarded contracts totaling 4.514 million dollars for a new 23 mile bridge across the Mississippi River from Clinton to East Clinton Illinois. Construction may begin before summer ends and is expected to take about two years to complete. The structure will carry U S 30.
Severe windstorms damaged houses and farm buildings across central Iowa with isolated twisters reported near Des Moines Bondurant and Marshalltown. Heavy rains up to four inches caused flash floods, power and phone lines were knocked down, and several homes and farms suffered structural damage.

Roy Kellogg, 51, of Woodland, was found Sunday with two bullet wounds to the head in his residence. Sheriff Oscar Midgorden said authorities consider possible attempted murder or self-inflicted shooting. Kellogg was in fair condition at a nearby hospital. a .22 rifle was found nearby as investigators pursue leads.
