At the Chicago Coliseum the Republican national convention opened its second session with Temporary Chairman Burrows in charge. A packed hall of 12,000 citizens and 1,000 delegates filled the arena, while bands played patriotic tunes and cheers greeted leading figures as the credentials report loomed as a key step in organizing the convention.
Temporary Chairman Burrows called the convention to order and Rev. William O. Waters led the opening prayer. The credentials committee report, awaited by a large crowd, was delivered by Chairman Charles W. Fulton amid a tense but hopeful atmosphere.
Enthusiastic crowd applauds a Taft nomination on first ballot as the convention accepts the proposed permanent organization and rules. A parade of celebs and delegations followed a march along Wabash avenue to the Coliseum, creating a scene of strong support for the Republican ticket.
The allies press to reverse national committee decisions on 110 contested delegates. Credentials hearings open after the first session, with Taft favored in many contested states. Ten minutes per side for delegates at large, eight for district contests. Alabama slated for Taft wins 35 to 7. Arkansas by default. Georgia and others rapid, as report moves to convention. Charles F Murphy Tammany Hall leader plans to leave New York four or five days before the state delegates. Delegates will ride in special trains July 3 to Denver for the national Democratic convention. Murphy says he will meet arriving leaders and awaits in Denver to decide on nomination. he sees Bryan likely to be nominated.

Carl Gillis and Arthur Woodward of Cayuga Indiana found a pearl in the Wabash river at the mouth of the Big Vermilion that weighs thirty seven grains. They were offered six hundred fifty dollars for the gem but refused. The pearl is described as a perfect capsule specimen.
Manitoba government report shows favorable agricultural conditions with fine weather and adequate moisture across the province. Wheat oats and barley acreage shows a substantial rise, signaling strong harvest prospects.
Washington June 17 Postmaster General Myer says a postal convention with Italy will allow parcel post shipments between the United States and Italy starting August 1 at 12 cents a pound for up to eleven pounds.
Chicago markets report weak to lower prices across hogs cattle and sheep for June 17 1908 with estimated receipts 35000 hogs 20000 cattle and 20000 sheep. Hogs show light to heavy ranges with bids 5.00 to 6.50 for various grades and porkers 5.60 to 5.70. cattle and cows vary from 2.50 to 8.15 for beef and western stockers 4.75 to 6.75. sheep and lambs range 3.25 to 6.55 with yearlings 4.80 to 5.65.
Market edges lower with an early decline led by light cattle and mixed packers. Cattle ease 10 to 15, sheep weakest 10 to 15, heavy shipments down 5 to 8, rough livestock 5 30 to 550 per hundredweight amid overall softer demand.

In New York on June 17 Miss Koten facing indictment for Dr. Auspitz murder shrieked and convulsed as officers restrained her she was carried to the anteroom later coroner's jury ruled Dr Auspitz killed by pistol by Sarah Koten. Also Gov Hughes renomination predicted by Senator Tully and Hearst mayoral recount shows a 109 vote gain. Mrs Marbury found safe in Red Bank after disappearance.
The sixth annual meeting of the National Lumber Manufacturers association convened in Minneapolis on June 17. William Irvine of Chippewa Falls Wisconsin, the president, reviewed the organization's past work and outlined future prospects as about 100 delegates attended. J B White of the Yellow Pine Manufacturers association Kansas City presented Taxation as Related to Forest Preservation, noting heavy state taxes reducing land values and hindering sales for lumber owners and timber holders.
San Francisco June 17 Eugene P Murphy aged sixty three died. Murphy born Albany New York graduated West Point 1867 and then received his commission was sent on the mission to Alaska when the territory was purchased from Russia.
The body of Mrs. Frederick A. Werner formerly of Boston was recovered from New York Harbor and positively identified by S. Briel of Boston. She disappeared from the Hotel Belmont in January and is believed to have died by her own hand.
In Fort Wayne on June 16 a Spaniard in a special coach with Italian immigrants bound for St Louis went insane and fatally stabbed a man, stabbed another, and wounded a third before leaping from the car window and fleeing. The incident occurred just as the westbound Wabash train pulled into the city.
Reportedly many delegates yet arrive as crowds fill the Coliseum. Erlinger’s Chicago band provides early entertainment while Colonel Stone opens doors at 10 50 a m. Women in colorful attire enhance the lively hall with a festive mood. National committee chairs remain unoccupied at 11 47 a m.
At 11 57 Mrs Beatrice Fisher Erlinger sings from the north band stand with a soprano solo My Old Kentucky Home and is greeted with great applause.
The Ohio delegation moved to their seats carrying canes with Taft banners as the convention opened. The band played Red White and Blue then The Star Spangled Banner. Fans waved flags and hats flew as Temporary Chairman Burrows of Michigan called the convention to order.
The scene opens with a mid day prayer by Rev. William O. Waters of Chicago at 12:23, as the convention joins in the Lord’s Prayer at 12:25. Senator Fulton of Oregon, chairing the credentials committee, says the panel has labored until 5:20 this morning and will deliver a report soon, while Judge Bundy of Newcastle Indiana, a 1856 convention delegate, is warmly welcomed at 12:33.
Colonel Malloy notes at 12 41 that while awaiting the credentials report the clubs in the city will parade via the Michigan avenue entrance across the hall and out to Wabash avenue. At 12 47 the parade begins led by the Knox club of Pittsburg followed by the Blaine club of Cincinnati Ohio.
The Columbus Glee club holds the center of attention in a lively performance, showcasing vocal harmony and stage presence that drew audience applause and local praise.
