Bulletin reports the Republican National Convention in Chicago opens its doors this morning. Delegates gather as party leaders prepare addresses and a full day of proceedings begins with speeches anticipated from prominent figures and keynote remarks shaping the party's platform.
Direct from the Chicago convention bulletins show crowds swelling at 10:30 am with doors opening and bands playing. Gallery seating is filling as delegates arrive. two Louisiana delegates are noted among early arrivals. Ohio holds central, front-row seating near the speakers, with New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois and others well represented.
The hall erupts as the band starts The Star Spangled Banner drawing cheers from all in attendance and many rise to their feet in salute.
At 11 50 the vast crowd throngs through the hall doors and takes seats with little confusion. Organizers manage the flow well as the hall fills rapidly.
California's delegation marches into the hall as a lead banner is shown. Senator J C Burrows of Michigan becomes temporary chairman amid cheers as Wisconsin enters with a banner reading Physical Valuation of Railroads.
Ohio delegates carry a Taft banner and photo as they enter the hall and are wildly cheered by the crowd. The moment captures spirited support for Secretary Taft during the event.
Colonel New, head of the Republican National Committee, calls the convention to order and receives cheers as President Roosevelt is mentioned. Bishop T J Muldoon of Chicago offers the opening prayer. Fred Upham, chair of arrangements, presents New with a gavel.
Senator Burrows invoked President Roosevelt amid loud cheers while delegates remained seated calmly.
Sen Burrows reads his speech amid loud cries from the gallery. He defends the anti injunction plank to applause and later references McKinley and Roosevelt drawing further cheers.
Senator Burrows spoke for one hour and twelve minutes addressing legislative issues and policy questions during the session.
The convention stood during the performance by the band as the crowd listened. Temporary officers were announced and read aloud to attendees.
On a motion by Senator Payne New York rules for the national house were adopted. Calls for the convention are read. Roll call of the states is made by the committee. A motion by Senator Lodge Massachusetts to read the committee list is suspended and the list will be given to the secretary. The convention adjourns until 10 30 tomorrow morning.
John Mitchell was unanimously indorsed for governor by the annual convention of district association No. 1 Illinois Clerks, comprising fifty cities. Alex Peterson of Galesburg was re elected president P A Hanson of Joliet was vice president and Charles P Gaede of Springfield was secretary treasurer.
At Dolly Nook home of Mrs. T B Evans in Silver Lake Indiana a Paul Nerian rose bush bore fifteen roses in bloom including one measured by Mrs. T D McClure and daughter Nelly at five and one half inches in diameter indicating remarkable bloom for the variety and season.
Bertha Libbecke known as Fainting Bertha was arrested by Officer Damm in Peoria. She was found disguised as a female drummer and was reading a newspaper account of her escape when taken into custody.
The forecast calls for generally fair conditions across Illinois with possible showers in the south portion and a slowly rising temperature. Indiana Lower Michigan and Wisconsin are expected to be fair with rising temperatures. Iowa will see increasing cloudiness with possible showers and rising temperatures.
Chicago June 16 Following are standings of the major leagues and daily scores. Rain postponed games in Philadelphia Chicago and New York Cincinnati. American League leaders Cleveland Detroit Philadelphia New York Boston Washington with varied results from games at Chicago Cleveland St Louis and others. Eleven innings at Cleveland saw Washington lose 2 to 1. St Louis beat Boston 10 to 0. Association and Western results noted with Milwaukee Louisville Toledo and other cities.
