President Eisenhower declared a mock state of martial law after a nationwide civil defense drill called Operation Alert. The exercise staged 61 cities under attack with casualty estimates in the millions to test mobilization, communications, and recovery across the United States.
Rural school buildings and sites were sold at auction for under $1000. Clarence Goff bought the Young America school and about a quarter acre for 450 with plans to build a residence northwest of Washington. Charles H. Brotherton purchased the Havre school and seven tenths acre for 530, including a coal house. Neither school had been used for several years.
London AP reports the British government drafted striking merchant seamen into military service after their walkout halted sailings of the Queen Mary and other liners. Thousands of tourists were stranded as the Mary could not sail from Southampton. Prime Minister Eden warned the port shutdown could harm the economy more than the recent rail strike.
Hollywood accused singer Mario Lanza and his family of causing 17000 in damages to a West Los Angeles home in a second suit in a week. Noah and Hayes Andrews filed the case with trial continued to September 14. They allege fences were torn through lawns rose gardens ripped out, and fish ponds filled.
British submarine Sidon exploded in Portland harbor and sank to 35 feet of water, with 13 men dead and seven hospitalized. The U S government announced that 21 American soldiers who chose communism in Korea may return home if they wish but could face prosecution. A joint White House State Defense and Justice release said any self surrender would lead to transfer to a consular official and possible federal or military charges after return. The State Department will arrange transport and determine any further action.

A joint operation by the sheriff's office city police and highway patrol checked about 350 cars on West Madison Street by Sunset Park. Highway patrolman Jim Richart said 40 violators were apprehended and ordered to repair various equipment on their vehicles.
Donald Adams, 22, of Burlington, was killed when his two room cabin on the Mississippi river bank burned early today. Police found his body on a bed inside the cabin where he lived alone. Adams had been recently released from military service. Cause of the fire remains undetermined.
