The Union Pacific Challenger, traveling from Chicago to Los Angeles, derailed six miles northeast of Fort Morgan Colorado after hitting a washed-out bridge while detouring around another washout. One person was killed and three crew members plus a passenger were injured. Most cars left the tracks as the diesel locomotive and several cars toppled. The passenger injuries were not serious.

Chicago stockyards worker Manuel Ramirez, 28, Lewd Laredo Texas, hid in a refrigerated boxcar loaded with sheep hides after being laid off with one dollar.
