Services Planned for Alma Hearne Holland

A memorial service for Alma Hearne Holland, who died in California April 29, will be at the Methodist church Wednesday at 2 30. Holland spent 45 years in India and her diary from 1904 shows her deep devotion to mission work. Family members and Dr. John W. Holland will participate.

Farmers May Extend Loans on 1950 Corn

Farmers may extend government loans on stored 1950 corn for another year, per Howard L. Witting, chairman of the Washington county PMA committee. Loans on corn under purchase agreements extended through July 1952. Reseal notices due by July 15, 1951. Reseal loans for 1948 and 1949 corn not extended. About 265,000 bushels remain under farm loans in the county.

Plan Special Service For National Guard

Members of the national guard unit of Washington and their families will attend a special service Sunday morning in the Methodist church. This is the concluding service of a series held each Sunday morning, usually at the armory, for the guard which has drilled on Sundays during the past weeks. All ministers who participated in the series will be present.

Mrs. Lola Hughes Retires After 26 Years Of Teaching

Mrs. Lola Hughes ends a 26 year teaching career at Milwaukee State Teachers College training school mostly in first grade. A Western Illinois State Teachers College graduate with a Columbia masters, she helped develop the school lunch program and new kindergarten to first grade methods. She plans to live with her mother in Washington Iowa and may vacation in Denver.

Gen MacArthur Ends Tour In Fort Worth

General MacArthur closed his Texas visit in Fort Worth before about 150000 supporters. He urged the public to expose what he called false propaganda and criticized the Truman administration over inflation taxes and rising government costs as he prepared to fly back to New York.

Daily Vacation Bible School Closes With Banquet

The Daily Vacation Bible School at the Baptist Church closed with a Friday banquet in the church dining room hosted by mothers including Mrs. Winter and Mrs. Lowry. Seven GIs Shot By Retreating Reds In Korea

On the central front near Hwachon in Korea the bodies of seven members of the 19th Regiment, 24th Division, were found west of a cliff. They showed hands tied behind them and had been shot in the head with bludgeoning near a pickaxe strike noted nearby. An eighth soldier survived with critical head wounds. The attack is labeled an atrocity by a U.S. investigation.

Three Cars Damaged In Collision At Rural Intersection

At 6 45 this morning three cars were damaged in a crash at the intersection of highways 92 and 218 east of Ainsworth. Lawrence Randolph Ross of Davenport failed to stop at the four way stop, driving into James H. Pohliman of St Louis who had just begun north across the intersection. Pohliman's car pushed Albert Lee Garrison of Muscatine into the front of his own vehicle. Skid marks from Ross stopping stretched about 101 feet according to the sheriff's office.

One Dead Five Hurt In Iowa Crash Near Council Bluffs

A collision involving three autos and a heavy truck on highway 6 east of Council Bluffs, Iowa, killed Marilyn Ibsen, 21, of Atlantic.
