In New York five CIO seamen and longshoremen locals voted to accept a Washington negotiated Wasp agreement ending a shipping strike that had crippled the port. Workers in other regions held meetings to decide on ratification with mass meetings planned tonight.
Over 1300 applications were made for driving licenses in three days at the court house. Daily totals ran around 457 on Wednesday 412 on Thursday and 43 on Friday. Wet weather may reduce numbers. Four girl clerks in the lobby process applicants from eight in the morning.

C. Carroll Reece told the Ohio War Veterans Republican Club in Columbus that Republicans aim to win a majority in both houses after the November elections. He cited expected gains in Massachusetts Rhode Island West Virginia Missouri New Mexico Nevada Utah Washington Montana Wyoming and Missouri to secure nine Senate seats and gain the House.
Government officials consider raising coffee price by three to five cents per pound with the higher cost passed to consumers buying from stores. The five cent cup price at retail would not change and no action will be taken until the subsidy program ends in June.

Crawfordsville resident John Stewart McCleary died after a month of illness in the county hospital yesterday evening. Born December 24 1861 near Macomb Illinois he lived in the Crawfordsville area most of his life. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2:30 pm at the United Presbyterian church with Rev R W McCracken officiating. Burial will follow in Crawfordsville cemetery. He served as an elder at the United Presbyterian church and was active in cemetery maintenance. Surviving are his wife two daughters Mina Randolph of Keota Florence Kongable of Winfield a son Bruce McCleary of Des Moines, 32 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was the oldest of five children and one brother Rev Charles McCleary died in West Africa in 1903 while a missionary.
Lee Lyon 68 of Trenton Iowa died at home after months of illness. He was husband to his wife and father to seven grown children, and brother of Mrs. E. H. Messer of Washington. Funeral services are 2 PM tomorrow at Crane Funeral Home Mt Pleasant with burial at Green Mound cemetery.
In a weekly radio address Chester Bowles warned that consumer goods shortages would ease if price controls persist, predicting goods like clothing and refrigerators will flood markets within six months while auto production suffers from a coal strike. He noted meatless Sundays loom as food remains scarce and urged ongoing exports to meet minimum needs.
A severe hail storm near Richmond damaged oats and other crops but reportedly did not destroy them. Local observer Robert Wel said hail was large and fell straight down, leaving ground covered with stones and ditches piled a foot deep after the Wednesday evening storm.

Republican Senator Styles Bridges of New Hampshire urged resignation of Justice Hugo L. Black after reviewing Black KKK ties and a past address to the National Citizens Political Action committee. Bridges argued the current Supreme Court climate does not justify impeachment.
