Two Anamosa escapees face murder charges in guard killing
Jones County Attorney Glenn McLaughlin said first degree murder charges would be filed against two Anamosa reformatory escapees, Hofors of Indianapolis and Larson of Fort Dodge, for killing a guard during their flight. The pair fled in a truck after forcing driver John Hinz to retreat. Hinz died from injuries. Authorities chased them through Maquoketa and into dense woods near Langworthy, with searches ongoing.

Health Improvement officials urged rural and town families to sign up before Tuesday June 18. In Washington city enrollments are accepted afternoons and Saturday evenings at the Y by Mrs. Leslie Gates and Mrs. Jay Sellers. Rural workers will submit envelopes to the township Blue Cross chairman or Farm Bureau office on Wednesday for forwarding to the Blue Cross office. Several hundred families, at least two thousand people, are expected to join before the campaign ends.

Two unidentified youths were taken into police custody in Davenport on June 14 after a money bag containing 1500 dollars disappeared from the city hall smoking room. A clerk left the bag on a rear counter. the two suspects were later found in a rooming house and deny the theft. No trace of the money has been recovered.

The Office of Price Administration indicates a cane sugar price hike pending with possible 10 cent per hundred pounds increase at mainland refineries and a one fifth cent per pound rise for consumers.
