Based on unofficial returns Williamsburg voters defeated two measures in a Tuesday special election. The city hall proposal asking 10 250 failed by 252 yes to 184 no missing 10 votes for 60 percent. The memorial building proposal 10 000 failed by 239 yes to 188 no missing 11 votes for 60 percent.
Bertha Lucile Harrison, 15, died reportedly from choking on a radish during dinner at the state hospital in Woodward. The Des Moines youth had been at the facility about a year, according to her mother Mrs. Ruth Harrison.
Iowa City Dr Daniel D Feder associate in psychology at the State University of Iowa announced his resignation to accept a July 1 appointment at the University of Illinois. He will serve as assistant professor of psychology and assistant director of the personnel bureau at Illinois.
Ames President Charles E. Finley says the state board of education approved appointing Prof. Carrold A. Iverson to succeed Prof. Martin Mortensen as head of the Iowa State College dairy industry department. Iverson, a long time Iowa State professor since 1939, previously took a fellowship in 1915 and served as instructor in 1916 with a master’s degree. he has also worked in dairy operations at Fairfield Ottumwa Farmington and Washington.
State Auditor Charles W. Storms reveals a total bonded debt of 25 740 00 for Iowa city schools with populations over 2000, averaging 118 28 per student. The 1923 audit covers 107 districts, eight show no bonded debt as of June 30 1923.
Iowa City announces Dr. John Brauer named professor and head of preventive dentistry and pedontia and director of the bureau of dental hygiene. Hana Koebel of Chicago named associate professor in music. Koebel has played with the Leipzig conservatory orchestra Breslau opera orchestra and Leipzig philharmonic, and recently served as cello soloist with the Chicago Civic Opera orchestra.
The 35th annual Iowa region convention of the National League of District Postmasters drew 150 postmasters to Sioux City. Leroy S. Gambs of Smithland called postmasters “errand boys, janitors and information-bureaus” and noted district postmasters run a one man establishment. John W Anderson served as toastmaster at the banquet with George Grubbs of Washington, D. D. C. as a banquet speaker.
Iowa City summer session students will learn two reel scale movie making for fun rather than credit. Under Lee Cochran of visual education, participants outline plans, photograph color activities in various departments, and cut the reels for campus life shorts.

Foster, daughter of Burrell Foster of Lime Creek township, previously worked in welfare in Sioux City and Marshalltown.
Reports from Frank Frazier in Washington say he is doing fairly well in a Mt. Pleasant hospital after injuries from a car crash near Mt. Pleasant the night before. He even asked his Washington relatives to send cigars.

Reed federal meteorologist reports in his weekly crop bulletin that corn stands from seedlings to over a foot high with some second cultivation. Chinch bugs and grasshoppers cause damage in southern counties, farmers using poison bait. Oats barley winter wheat and hay show good progress though growth often too rank, rust reported in considerable areas.
Franklin Vierce McCall was found guilty today of kidnaping five year old Jimmy Cash in Miami Florida by Judge H F Atkinson without a jury. Sentencing deferred until tomorrow. The offense carries a possible death sentence in the electric chair under Florida law. The case closed in 18 days after the abduction. McCall had been indicted for kidnaping and murder, pleaded guilty to kidnaping, but denied the murder charge.
Heavy rains hit eastern Iowa with 4.78 inches in Dubuque and 3.78 inches in several towns. A night shower across Crawfordsville to Mt Pleasant produced near cloudburst conditions with deep water on roads and farmers sightseeing stock losses. Temperatures rose to 90 in the warmest day in weeks while last night’s low stood at 63. More thunderstorms were forecast later today or tonight.

King notes 23 counties dry 22 dry 26 moist 28 wet and warns local option could shift counties to dry and end grain revenue while harming labor and employment. He dismisses local option as a sincere approach and cites jobs tax and revenue gains since 1933. King spoke in Carroll at a meeting of class B permit holders from Carroll and nearby counties.

A noon joint meeting of the Rotary club and Y's Men's club in the community room of the YMCA discussed international aims. Lewis Warren, International President of the Y's Men, spoke on breaking down nationalistic hate barriers through neighborly understanding. BE. A. Ralston of Rotary emphasized economic sufficiency for world peace. he praised U S natural resources as a strength. A good turnout from both clubs attended, with President Alcorn of Rotary presiding.

A small fire yesterday evening damaged shingles on the Carrment market slaughter house west of town. The blaze started from brush and trash set by San Yeoman and Skinny Matthews. The Farmers Mutual Fire Company responded and kept the fire under control. damage was covered by insurance.
The Rust College Jubilee Singers performed last evening before a fair crowd despite a storm. The vocal program included varied selections with a reader as part of the group. Six performers, two women and four men, all African American, took part. A similar Holly Springs, Mississippi college group appeared here about two years ago.
Funeral services for Sylvia Furman Ferguson will be held at one o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the Wellman Methodist church. Interment will be in Fairview cemetery. Ferguson, 34, died Tuesday morning at University hospital Iowa City. J R Wardansons of Cedar Rapids visited. Russell Jr. visits cousins Clayton and Kenneth Ward.
