The Iowa Taxpayers Association announced preliminary plans for a state taxpayers conference in Des Moines on July 16 to acquaint taxpayers groups with details of the budget appeal law. Open forum discussions are expected with a large turnout from taxpayers associations and vic groups.
Mothers urged to enter early for the 1937 beautiful baby contest at the state fair. A staff of 40 baby specialists will judge widely separated classes for rural town city and twin babies plus improvement class. Eligible age 12 to 36 months with trophies and medals.
Bronson, Kansas teen Charles Mills, 16, was brought to Indianola Monday from Osceola after admitting he took Clarence Sehhfier's car Monday morning after Lehrier gave him a ride.
The treasury awarded Bonded Construction Co of New York City a contract for postoffice construction in Sigourney totaling $49,307.

Centerville Association of Commerce votes to telegraph Senator Clyde L Herring and Representative Lloyd Thurston asking their influence to keep the local CCC camp open. The camp has 116 men enrolled and was ordered abandoned July 1. An accomplice is believed to have freed Stanton Vallen 24 William Mayer 24 and Raymond Smith 25 from the Cherokee county jail, Sheriff A N Tilton said the accomplice stole the jail key during his wife’s upstairs visit and hid in the basement.
Internal Revenue Collector Charles D Huston says 25 percent of Iowa employers owe penalties for failing to file reports or pay federal old age pension taxes. About 12 500 of an estimated 89 000 owe penalties ranging from 6 to 25 percent, mostly small employers, he added. Twins reunite after 26 years in Humboldt as Mrs Tana Anderson and her sister Mrs Yanna Gilde plan to celebrate their 53rd birthday here Friday. born in the Netherlands, both widows.
The Washington county board of supervisors renewed the county health unit for one year starting July 1 1937 with a maximum county cost of 3290 and an average 266 monthly. The unit will refund 477 67 it overdrawn last year and receive 6150 in federal funds to cover most expenses. The maternity unit will also continue costing about 8900 with federal funds. Dm F L Walsh remains director and leads the unit’s ongoing operation.
The health column notes continued vaccination against diphtheria and smallpox will keep these diseases rare in Washington county with eight years of no diphtheria cases. It also urges ongoing preschool exams to correct remedial defects before school entry for better outcomes.
Knights of Columbus lodge in Kansas City held annual election at the K. C. ball. Paul R. Horak was re elected grand knight with officers including Mark Koening deputy grand knight and Dr J A Marie chancellor. Georges Wheelan named past grand knight and delegates to the state convention. The meeting featured talks by Rev Theophane gecavitz and Rev A B Van Waus.
Five daily vacation Bible schools report a total enrollment of 315 with four opening yesterday and one starting its second week at the Christian church. County offices and deputies will be closed Thursday June 17 to attend the state convention of county officers held that day in Davenport.
Des Moines reports Allen Wheaton, 20, sentenced to death for the slaying of Henry Plummer at a Council Bluffs service station. The Iowa Supreme Court upheld the verdict and set September 10 as the gallows date, with only a gubernatorial clemency appeal remaining. Two other inmates at Fort Madison, Marlow Heinz and Jack Mercer, sought life sentences.
The A M E Church in Washington marks 75 years since its 1861 organization with eight founders from the south. The program featured Mayor Lievel Lytle and Rev. Vernon Carter, and included a history by Emma Black and spiritual singing led by Rev. W. M. Berry. The church building dating to 1876 has housed 55 pastors amid supportive input from other churches.
Crawfordsville historians present a Methodist celebration pageant in the school auditorium at eight o clock tomorrow night. The drama recounts pioneer deeds such as Ad am Ritchey the first white settler in Washington county and his dealings with John Black and William Penn. It follows Ritchey’s claims, marriage by the Moorhead family, and the founding of the local Methodist society with Asa D West as missionary organizer.
Former Washington resident Mrs. Elia Sherman died this morning at Mt. Pleasant. Her body was brought to Sherman’s funeral home for arrangements to be finalized after daughter Mrs. Edward Nielson of Seymour, Iowa, arrives. another daughter Mrs. L. F. Moothart of Washington survives.
Des Moines reports J. W. Chorpening lost his appeal to recover personal property from John M. and John A. Nickerson in a Washington county case.
Six men from the Omaha truck drivers strike forced a roadblock near Pierce Nebraska and set fire to a truck carrying fresh meat groceries and tires. The blaze followed the ongoing strike actions.
Don and Fort Sherman of Washington will be buried in Elm Grove cemetery. The notice confirms burial arrangements and location.
