West Branch Iowa marks Herbert Hoover's nomination with a townwide celebration on Main Street. Merchants, teachers, and residents recall Hub Bertie’s boyhood, join speeches, band concert, and fireworks as bells and whistles echo pride. one man laments he did not know Hoover.
At yesterday evening’s Better Washington club meeting Frank Carter Harry Ward Russell Jennings and J W Enslin formed a committee to arrange ten cars to transport the drum corps and citizens to Ainsworth and Columbus Junction for a booster trip. Enslin reported on industrial prospects and Carter highlighted Troop G 113th Cavalry’s value to the area. Warren urged more effort on the city beautiful idea.
Nearly six hundred members expected for the 21st district Eastern Star session in Washington tonight. Worthy Grand Matron Mrs Harriet McMasters of Sutherland Iowa and other grand officers were hosted at a luncheon by Washington past matrons at Mrs Howard Richardson's home. A banquet is set for 6 36 p m with Mrs Ralph Thompson in charge as officers from 23 chapters confer degrees. The Suez Canal transit time averages 16 hours.
This evening at 6 30 the Washington group including the American Legion drum corps and Leon Beatty post members will visit Ainsworth and Columbus Junction to advertise the local Fourth of July celebration. They will play, distribute literature, and speak briefly while socializing with residents. A half hour will be spent at each town. Other trips are planned for June 18 Kalona Riverside June 20 Keota Richland Brighton June 21 Olds Winfield Mt Pleasant June 22 Crawfordsville Wayland. The party will visit Brighton and Mt Pleasant on band concert nights and Crawfordsville for the pavement opening celebration. A committee was formed at Better Washington club to recruit cars, with ten promised.
The eighty fifth annual Masonic lodge communication in Cedar Rapids elected Reed of Cedar Rapids to the top post, with Grayson of Washington installed as grand ruler. Other officers include Palmer of Cedar Rapids as deputy grand secretary Burdine of Wapello as grand chaplain and Douglass of Postville as grand marshal. The session adjourned after officer installation.
