Five miles from Sebastopol the Russian submarine Kambala sank after a collision with the battleship Rostislav during maneuvers. Four men were saved including Commander Aguilonoff who reported misinterpreted orders and a port helm. Divers died from pressure as attempts to rescue the trapped crew failed.
Grinnell Iowa June 14 Governor Joseph W Folk of Missouri will deliver the commencement address for the Grinnell college class of 19 9 9. The ceremony marks Grinnell's largest graduating class with ninety eight graduates and a record alumni turnout. The event follows a half million dollar endowment drive and notable athletic successes that strengthen ties between college, students and alumni.
In Oskaloosa Iowa on June 14 Rev Ed Kiser of San Francisco bought Oskaloosa College, Iowa's pioneer Christian church education institution once rival to Drake University. Managed by C J Burton as a normal and business college with a correspondence school and about 800 students, the sale was facilitated by the Oskaloosa Commercial club. Burton transfers local interests to Colorado as the college is to be reorganized.
A carload of liquor bound for Fort Riley was denied to soldiers by Colonel Ward the commandant. Guards were posted and the shipment was ordered returned to Kansas City. Kansas laws bar liquor sales, and Ward argues the measure maintains military discipline.
Swaledale Iowa June 14 Miss Hattie England daughter of Mr and Mrs William England is missing after leaving home a week ago She was traced to Minneapolis but three days of searching by her father and the police yielded no clue The family cites a home quarrel as the cause of the flight.
Charles H. Chaffee pleaded for mercy as he was sentenced to life hard labor in Auburn prison for a fourth conviction costing $17 in chickens. The judge had no option for parole after the maximum term and Chaffee already has half of a twenty year sentence served.
Mrs. Mary Nelson and Mrs. Mary Campbell drowned when their boat struck a snag on Cahokia creek near East St. Louis. A woman and two children survived thanks to deputy sheriff Mike Haggerty who exhausted himself rescuing them.
Manila reports Brigadier General Harry H. Bandholtz will take personal command of constabulary forces pursuing mutineers in Davao on Mindanao. Several regular and constabulary columns are in the field as authorities vow to press the hunt until all mutineers are captured.
Fort Des Moines scene details an internal shooting by Corporal Lisle Crabtree after an official reprimand. Captain John Co. Raymond and First Sergeant James H. Washburn were wounded, with Crabtree also fatally injuring himself. Raymond faces possible paralysis and uncertain recovery at Mercy hospital.
The Evangelical Lutheran churches of America began their annual conference in Clear Lake Iowa with 200 delegates from Illinois Wisconsin Minnesota Iowa Nebraska South Dakota and North Dakota. Opening day focused on religious exercises and delegate receptions. President Stenby report and officer elections to be featured in today's session.
St Ansgar Iowa June 14 Miss Ethel McKinley of this county left for Atlanta Georgia to take a position with the YWCA as a worker among shop girls in cotton factories. She will supervise several mill towns in the state and conduct religious work among young women.
In Boston on June 14 Boston's Unitarian leaders and friends gathered at the South Congregational church to pay tribute to Rev Dr Hale. The giant turnout included officials such as British Ambassador Bruce and Governor Draper. Hale lay in state from 10 to 1 before burial at Forest Hill cemetery in a private ceremony.
Twenty five thousand people gathered on the Bowery to honor Jacob M. Gordin the Jewish playwright and educator who died in Brooklyn. His funeral was held at the Thalia theater reflecting his Hebrew life in drama and humanitarianism.
Former circuit court judge Abner Smith, ex president of the Bank of America, is ordered to Joliet after Governor Deneen rejects clemency. The state pardon board recommendation and the supreme court mandate leave no further delay. Reprieve from Sheriff Strassheim expires today and Smith will be sent to prison at once.
State Senator H W Gauze appointed as special commissioner reports International Harvester is a trust. He concludes the merger has regulated and controlled retail and wholesale prices of harvesting machines in Kansas.

Senators Bailey Cummins and allied Republicans expect adoption of a compromise amendment while divisions over duties on hides coal petroleum rough lumber and other items cloud final passage. The outcome and the maximum minimum rate debate loom as the bill nears its end in the chamber.
Albany June 14 The state prison census reports 990 alien inmates with 319 felons arriving within three years of arrival. Authorities propose deportation and commutation to enable mass removal. Of the 319, 187 are Italians with Russia next at 44, Germany 20, Austria 19, England 16, Canada 8.
Retiring American minister to China W. W. Rockhill was welcomed in a farewell audience by Regent Prince Chun in Peking. The American legation staff attended the event and noted cordial sentiments toward Rockhill and the United States.
