Withdrawal plans outline GI return from Vietnam
The first of 25 000 American GIs to be pulled from Vietnam will be 900 combat infantrymen airlifted to the continental United States before mid July. The 9th Infantry Division battalion will be inactivated and the withdrawal will total about 10 000 soldiers plus a reinforced Marine unit of about 7 000. Details to be announced by Gen Abrams as units and sequence are planned. In parallel, a separate Iowa barn fire caused $45 000 damage after faulty wiring.
