Extra police patrolled Damen and Division after night of street fighting left a patrolman and two others wounded, 13 with minor injuries, three police cars damaged, and 36 arrested. Canine units aided as rocks and bottles flew, a Puerto Rican man was shot, and fires followed.
Central Iowa endured heavy rain and high winds Saturday night with at least eight tornadoes reported. Creeks overflowed, rivers rose rapidly, and dozens of Des Moines families evacuated as floodwaters breached banks along Four Mile Creek. Some highways closed briefly before reopening by Sunday afternoon.
Des Moines UPI Lex Hawkins stepped down as part time Iowa Democratic chairman. State Rep Clark Rasmussen of Des Moines was named to replace him full time at 15000 dollars yearly after a closed central committee meeting following the state convention. Rasmussen, 31, has been executive secretary since January and previously worked as a Travelers Insurance claims supervisor. He plans to finish his current legislative term and not seek re election. Hawkins will remain on the committee as 5th district committeeman and focus on party organization. Evelyn Hood Ruth Moyer and J Don Wimner were named other party officers.
Nearly 300 demonstrators left a lakeside campsite to restart the Mississippi Freedom March toward Jackson Mississippi entering its second week amid tensions among SNCC CORE and SCLC leaders. They planned to drive five miles then resume walking about ten miles with voter registration outreach along U.S. 51.
