Scenes From a Kitchen Window

A reflective local column describes daily scenes from a kitchen window including weather chatter about ongoing rain, a granddaughter painting the kitchen, a torn down nine room house, a nurseryman’s strawberry crop woes, and a quip about whipped cream versus cream to top desserts. Feeder cattle prospects buoyed by summer pasture notes

Iowa State University economist Gene Futrell says lower feeder cattle prices and improved moisture could make a favorable alternative for summer pasture. He notes price drops of 3.50 to 4.00 since last year, with more cattle entering feeder channels this year and summer prices near current levels or slightly lower. Demand factors include beef promotions, government buying, and school lunch program participation.
