Clear Lake plant expansion boosts E F Johnson Co growth

The E F Johnson Co in Clear Lake launched a $2 million expansion that will double the workforce from 500 to about 1,200 and add 44 000 square feet of manufacturing space a new warehouse and a two story office building The project aims to house the citizen band radio division in Clear Lake with corporate HQ remaining in Waseca Minnesota The manufacturing facility is due to be ready by October with the office building by early next year The company also operates in Garner and Mason City.

Five charged with illegal sales of alcoholic drinks

Five Washington County bartenders face criminal informations charging illegal sale of alcohol to a minor. Floyd J. Napp Inez H. Schrader Peter N. Rich Emily E. Knapp and John D. Goldsberry are set for arraignment in Magistrate Court on June 23. charges stem from a May 18 probe by state vice agent Bob Williams.

Keota marshal Doug Bell shot. investigation continues

Keota Night Marshal Doug Bell, 22, was found shot to death near his patrol car on Iowa 77 south of Keota around 3 am Friday. State investigators noted two tavern break-ins and a car theft in Keota but say no immediate link to the murder. Funeral services are set for Monday in Columbus Junction with burial in Grandview Cemetery.

Reach-Out programs run this week in Washington city

The Summer Youth Employment and children's Reach-Out programs start this week in Washington with sponsors Washington County and Southeast Iowa Community Action Organizations. Denise Clingman coordinates morning employment help at the Chamber of Commerce, Patty Sojka directs Reach-Out for 4 to 13 year olds, and Lucy Gamon oversees the USDA Nutrition meal program. Mixed Concorde verdict from FAA first report card

UPI reports the Concorde SST received mixed grades in the FAA first report card. Air pollution levels matched those of other jets while noise readings ranged from 83 percent below to 57 percent above predicted levels. Six landings and takeoffs by British Airways and Air France at Dulles from May 24 to May 31 are covered.

Washington City Hall hosted a demonstration of the Hurst twin-armed hydraulic spreader and puller. The 60 pound unit, costing about 5000 dollars, can pry apart twisted wreckage, lift roofs, and remove doors, with a 32 inch reach in 40 seconds and a built in safety system.
