Waterloo Iowa the dairy cattle congress board awarded contracts for a hippo drome saddle horse barn a feed barn and an addition to the poultry building to John G Miller Construction Co The buildings are valued at 17000 dollars
J. H. Mayne deputy City engineer insured all Crescent area farm buildings against windstorm damage except the hay shed. A windstorm then struck the farm wrecking only the hay shed while leaving the other buildings intact.
Allen Black considered for constable in Grant township during June primaries. He did not file papers but asked supporters to write in his name. Returns show four Democrat and two Republican ballots cast for Black.
The Cedar Falls Rotary club voted 100 to help Pierce Knox a 15 year old xylo phonist from Washington travel to New York City for a radio audition. Knox attends the Iowa State School for the Blind at Vinton.
Saturday July 13 will be observed as Flag Day in Washington by patriotic societies since July 14 falls on Sunday. Businesses are urged to display flags and residents to have flags out at home. The Chapter American Revolution is set for ceremonies at the lodge cabin in Sunset Park with a delegation from Iowa City expected.
The Journal lists McAvoy Beauty Salon Sarah Helwick and Oveetten Seed Store among outlets closing all day Saturday July 4. Further closures will be announced as identified.
A national alert emerges as Henry Plummer, 30, is found shot to death near a ditch in southwestern Iowa after a robbery at an oil station. A car stolen at Sioux Rapids is recovered near Shenandoah with items from the veterinary killed in the crime, and investigators link the case to Minnesota desperadoes.
Howard Anderson of Tucker and Anderson recalls that he has not had a portrait taken since he crossed into Mexico in 1920. The remark introduces a feature on local residents and notable anecdotes from Washington County.
In Dallas on June 12 President Roosevelt urged labor and small business support against monopolies. He warned a rise in economic concentration could turn labor into a commodity, risking boarding houses over homes and eroding democratic opportunity. He cited gains in confidence and prosperity since his 1932 presidency.
In Cleveland 1936 the Republican National Convention nominated Col Frank Knox as vice president running mate for Governor Alf Landon with a unanimous 1003 to 0 vote. Landon was nominated last night on the first ballot with 984 to 19 for Borah. The platform emphasizes constitutional guarantees and opposition to the New Deal.
June 14 marks National Flower Shut-in Day. The Florists Telegraph Delivery Association sponsors the effort to bring flowers to permanent shut-ins unable to enjoy blooms outdoors. Wolf Floral Co of Washington urges residents to share flowers or notify them of shut-ins for free bouquets. The company delivers to hospitals and the county home each year.
The county wide Centennial celebration plans concessions with rides games and entertainment. Interested parties should contact Joe Falk immediately as limited space remains at thirty dollars per foot for the entire five days including July 4.
Funeral services for Mrs. D Ritchey are set Saturday afternoon at 3 30 at Shermans funeral home with Rev Db C Fulton officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. She died yesterday after a lingering illness at 83 years old. She lived in this county most of her life except five years in Kansas. She was born April 27 1853. She married D R Ritchey Sept 10 1879. Surviving is daughter Mrs Bessie Wead Washington. Four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Phil H Sproul executive secretary of the Iowa Safety Council will speak at the Washington county safety meeting in the American Legion Club rooms city hall at eight o clock this evening replacing R W Kelley Ottumwa who was previously listed. The event aims to promote highway safety and reckless driving elimination with a local unit and county organization planned.
Robert Manning of Coppock paid a total of 11.35 in fines and costs after appearing before Justice J. E. Bovee. A section of his driver license was suspended and his car collided with another near Brighton.
County auditor Miss Ethel Grecian announced the party committeemen and delegates chosen at the primary for both parties. Delegates and committeemen listed for Republican and Democratic slates across townships and precincts with a Washington convention date set for Saturday June 27 under state election laws.
The eighth consecutive Whoopee day sponsored by the American Legion drew the largest crowd yet. Afternoon events drew smaller attendance as farmers were in fields, but evening festivities filled Main Street with races, boxing, dances, rides, and bands. One minor accident occurred when two cars collided. Bob Manhing sustained a minor facial cut. Mrs. George H. Gallup arrived from Princeton New Jersey to visit relatives.
