Judge James P. Gaffney dismissed the claims of St. Peter's Roman Catholic church members of Cosgrove Iowa City who sought repayment of contributions made in 1917 for a parochial school construction. The decree was filed in district court.
A 14 year old boy, Charles Schuster, was found bound in a drainage ditch east of Fort Dodge a few hours after his parents received a ransom note demanding 1200 dollars for his safe return. Police reported no injuries beyond the binds and he was unharmed.
A dramatic encounter ends with a sheriff shooting a man during a pursuit as three children in the rear seat sob for their mother. In the front seat an officer struggles with a fleeing prisoner over a loaded revolver. The inmate is seriously wounded, and the car floor catches the worst of the struggle.
Fairfield school nurse Mrs Lillian Grove reports that children who received milk lunches last winter lost weight after the program ended. The May findings note weight declines began promptly once milk lunches ceased.
Professional tennis player Ellsworth Vines Jr. of Pasadena survives a car crash near Chinton, while a young farm boy riding in the vehicle is killed. The accident prompted formal investigations and tributes to the deceased.
Massena doctor H. H. Pen, who calls his work a crazy notion, will entertain 1,065 people he has delivered in 25 years of practice. Born in Mingo Iowa, he studied at Drake college of medicine and arrived 25 years ago in a horse and buggy. He has attended the birth of nine pairs of twins.
An Ames band consisting entirely of directors will perform as the first day feature of the Iowa Band Masters Association convention in Ames.
Directors of the Davenport Bank and Trust Co voted a two percent dividend on capital stock for the first half of 1935. The June 30 payment will go to stockholders of record June 15, totaling about $12,000 on 6,000 shares.
Cedar Rapids resident B. C. Carpenter hooked a live baby red fox while fishing from the Third Ave bridge. He brought the fox home to his cat which is caring for four kittens.
Eleven married teachers and two others were removed from the Muscatine school staff for the next term. District Judge PD V. Jackson dismissed their mandamus action to reinstate them against the Muscatine school district.
New J C Penney clerk John Cordes and wife Martha Dickey Cordes reside at 411 West Jefferson. They celebrated their first anniversary, Cordes being a Parsons graduate in liberal arts with business administration. Formerly from Villisea, he worked at Fairfield Penney store during studies. They attend the Methodist church.
Senator Huey P. Long signaled a potential filibuster to block the NRA resolution, saying the matter may not be resolved before Sunday night as the national recovery act under which the NRA operates expires this weekend. The senate rejected tabling a motion to reconsider an amendment requiring government employees earning 4000 or more to face Senate confirmation, opening a path to possible reversal. Speaker Byrns led an administrative push to break a House committee deadlock on the public utilities bill amid strong partisan action.
President Roosevelt told the West Point graduating class that the United States keeps a modest army to deter aggression and uphold peace. He cited congressional action to partially restore the army and reaffirmed the good neighbor policy.
The county corn hog office announced that 1935 contracts for Brigh ton Cedar Clay and Crawford townships are typed and will be sent to local committees for farmers’ final signatures. Work on group one contracts proceeds alphabetically and should finish by late next week. A special bulletin explains changes in farming units allowing rental of land but requires reporting by June 27 and prohibits planting corn on the additional tract with hogs rules to be detailed at the office.
Sarah Marie Davis of Washington has been selected to receive the Alpha Gamma Delta rose bowl scholarship at Coe College commencement. Awarded to the freshman woman with the highest scholastic standing in the first semester, the prize is offered by the Coe chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta, a national social sorority, and is not limited to members of the sorority.
James L Shrader, who died at his home on East Fourth Street, was born May 21 1851 in Moundsville West Virginia. He moved to Washington with his parents in 1854 and lived here 81 years as a farmer and carpenter. He married Hannah Putman in 1873 and is survived by six children, a sister, 16 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Funeral services slated for Thursday at the L A Jones funeral home with Rev Vernon Carter officiating. burial in Woodlawn cemetery.
The weekly weather and crop bulletin reports rapid corn planting and re planting on Iowa farms. Some western and central areas show wind driven dust damage while most counties continue cultivation with a second pass in northern regions. Fair weather persists with sunshine through Thursday and highs near 84 degrees in Keokuk and Alta.
Rosalie Combs was installed county president of 4-H girls clubs by retiring president Eleanor Augustine. She belonged to the Jolly Jokers club and was runner up for champion clothing club girl. Other officers installed were Helen Dickinson vice president Kathryn Stewart secretary treasurer and Gladys Turninseed historian. A banquet hall at Washington high school hosted 197 people at noon.
William Mahan Harmon and Margaret Waley, named by Justice Department agents as kidnapers of a nine year old boy, were charged under the Lindbergh law. Federal warrants show the boy was confined at two Idaho locations over eight days before being taken to Spokane. Agents tracked the fugitives from Montana to Dillon and Butte as a food request led toward recognition.
The Washington Municipal Band will present a good will concert in West Chester tomorrow evening at eight o'clock. The event is sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, featuring a full 38 piece band in uniform and a varied program expected to attract a large crowd from the community.
In Painesville Ohio five sets of twins were born within 16 days at Lake County Memorial Hospital. Of 25 total children born during the period ten were twins, marking a notable clustering of twin births in the town.
Mrs. Ben Ulin of Wellman began a thirty day sentence in the county jail for assault and battery. The sentence was imposed by Mayor E. C. Jones after an altercation in which Mrs. Ulin was involved.
Chicago attorney W M Keeley advocates adding a Burlington bus route through Washington Sigourney Oskaloosa Pella Muscatine to Chicago. He cites limited rail service, praises the Great White Way road, and urges making the route part of a transcontinental bus line with daily two-way service between Chicago and Los Angeles via Davenport Des Moines Omaha.
In Hollywood California the writer jokes about a kidnaping case and federal versus state power. They mock Supreme Court standing and suggest pardoned criminals hint at who the criminal is, noting two men who moved through jails as if on brief stays.

George William Finch aged 34 died at 6 3 yesterday afternoon at Washington county hospital after two weeks of treatment for blood poisoning from a facial infection that developed five weeks prior. He was born near Iowa City on September 20, 1900 and married Leona Leaser on February 15, 1922. Funeral services will be held Thursday at two o'clock in the Methodist church with Dr. F C Witazigman officiating, burial at Elm Grove cemetery. He is survived by his widow, his parents, and two sisters Mrs W A Bealer and Mrs W L Propst.
Mr and Mrs Roger Birdsall and daughter Sally of Waterloo were here yesterday. Mrs Birdsall was formerly Dora Wickham.
