In Cedar Rapids Iowa fourteen residents fled a three story building after an electrical outlet sparked flames around 3 am. Maria Kenicker returned home and alerted others before firefighters arrived. Damage estimated at 15 000 to 20 000 dollars. No injuries reported.
VICTOR Iowa UPI Forrest Frosty Mitchell a Grinnell radio station executive won the Republican nomination for the state Senate seat in Poweshiek County defeating John Schwibert 139 to 129. He will face Jo Ann Orr in the June 19 election set after Kenneth Benda left the seat to join the state commerce commission. Mitchell helped Bob Ray win the governor's race last year.
An intercepted message alludes to Viet Cong activity in Vietnam with a pointed line about names and consequences. The note ends with a personal sign off, Yours, WEJ, hinting at a covert or informal communication channel.
The White House ruled out wage and price controls if Congress does not extend the 10 percent income tax surcharge. Treasury Secretary Kennedy had suggested controls as a possible remedy for inflation. President Nixon, via press secretary Ziegler, said no plans exist to impose controls even if the surtax is not renewed. The administration stresses the surtax extension is vital to curb inflation and fund the budget. Senate and House opposition, with Sen. McCarthy calling the plan a gimmick, adds to political hurdles.
President Thieu dismissed the Viet Cong announced provisional revolutionary government as Hanoi propaganda. He said it has no significance and will not alter Saigon’s stance in Paris peace talks. He labeled NLF leaders as Hanoi’s puppets and warned negotiations remain two sided.
Washington County Democrats plan a July 4 First District Democratic Party picnic at the county fairgrounds with nine dogs barbecued and serving from 2 to 4 pm. Tickets are $5 for families or $1.50 for individuals, with Mr. and Mrs. Don Pilcher named ticket sales chairs. A noted speaker heads the day’s program billed as Democratic Fun Day, plus kiddie rides, drawings, and food supervised by the Democratic Women’s Club under Mrs. Paul Adams.
North Vietnamese troops attacked a U S artillery base on the northern coast before dawn. Military spokesmen reported 11 GIs killed and 32 wounded in hand to hand fighting. After sunrise defenders from the 196th Light Infantry Brigade recovered 27 North Vietnamese bodies and seized a flamethrower and 12 rifles.
Two Washington district schools and Mid Prairie buildings were cited in January by the State Fire Marshal for fire safety violations. Open stairwells created a chimney risk in Washington High and Brighton elementary, with plans to seal stairs after assessment by Wehnert & Associates. Estimated cost to close open stairwells is 9000 to 10000 dollars, and bids will follow drawings approval.
In Des Moines the Republican led Legislative Council chose Sen. Seeley Lodwick as chairman and House Republican Ralph McCartney as vice chairman on a party line vote. Democrats decried the move calling it partisan. Lodwick and McCartney will steer committee work before the 1970 session, while Jepsen declined nomination citing separation of powers.
The Viet Cong announced it has vested all power in a provisional revolutionary government for South Vietnam and its Paris delegation will represent the people there. Algeria recognized the new government as other Communist nations were expected to follow, while Thieu dismissed it as propaganda. The move aims to bolster the Communists in seeking Thieu’s replacement and an early peace.
London based Englishman living abroad B E Miller bought seven moldavites at an auction for 96 dollars. The glassy tektites from Moldavia in Czechoslovakia may be lunar fragments erased by eons of geology and have been found in Texas Georgia Australia the Philippines Indochina and Czechoslovakia.

Washingtons Municipal swimming pool will begin the 1969 season on Saturday June 14 after maintenance and weather caused a brief delay. Greg Goodell is pool manager with lifeguards Kim Steele Jim Harris Matt Ross Karla Kneen Joette Swartzendruber and Linda Wertz on duty. Admission and hours remain as last year with season tickets and family passes available.
