The Washington chapter of Future Farmers of America held a June meeting featuring installation of officers. New officers are Don Palmer president, Jack Peiffer vice president, Leland Swift secretary, Larry Jackson treasurer, Charles Phelps reporter, Eddie Crane sentinel. Retiring officers include Leon Sherman president and George Moore vice president. Committees named cover concession stand, achievement show float, swine chain, and point system with several chapter members listed.
The Young Republicans executive board met at the Norton home and decided to hold a new member meeting in Sunset Park on June 22 with U S House candidate Fred Sehwengel attending a panel discussion. An annual meeting is set for July 2 before the county convention. A dominating committee was named and will present officer candidates at the annual meeting. Membership has risen to over 606.
Communist forces seal off the Red River Delta with units reaching Than Hoa sixty miles south of Hanoi and surrounding the valley as French planes strike 100,000 Red troops and guerrillas in the western delta area.
A closed-door session Thursday with governors and delegates from 15 states discussed the Supreme Court ruling. Stanley, host and chair of the one-day conference, said only West Virginia Maryland and Kentucky indicated an intention to conform with the court’s decision.

In Arizona a ransom kidnapping of Evelyn Ann Smith is traced to a desolate 50 mile desert area east of Phoenix. A valise thermos jug and food were found with tracks leading deputies FBI and patrol cars following. Mrs Smith was released after her husband paid the ransom and followed a trail of notes.
Gov. William Stratton said Vice President Nixon will campaign for Illinois GOP candidates this year after Eisenhower’s State Fair speech on August 19. He noted McCarthy's fate in campaign plans but stressed Illinois will lead with its own record.
Donald Trier of Washington county, farmer, seeks 5000 in damages from Pitman Moore Co division Allied Laboratories Inc and Paul J McAndrews DVM in district court. He alleges 120 pigs died after vaccination on April 15 with vaccine distributed April 23 causing illness. Jury trial requested.
Senator Ralph Flanders urged the Senate to strip Joseph McCarthy of chairmanships if he fails to purge himself of contempt. He based the charge on McCarthy’s refusal to testify before a rules subcommittee investigating finances, a charge he said extended to the Senate. The pledge followed Flanders’ dramatic preface signaling another floor speech and a confrontation during the Army McCarthy hearings.
Officers of the Washington Knights of Columbus Council were elected at a Thursday meeting and plans set for the 35th anniversary on June 30. Richard Pacha was named grand knight with Rev R J Kinnavey chaplain and other officers including Dr G J Krogmeier deputy and knight J P Fulr recorder Don Custer treasurer and several trustees. Delegates to the state convention were Richard Pacha and J M Kelly with alternates FE Ho Nugent and Charles Friese. The next meeting date also marks the council anniversary with Marian service and social.
Funeral services for John E Wheeler age 68 will be held at Conesville Methodist Church at 2 p m Saturday with burial in Conesville Cemetery He died Wednesday at a Muscatine hospital The body is at Stephens Funeral Home in Columbus Junction
Washington DeMolay chapter schedules a spring formal dance at the Washington Country Club on Tuesday June 15 at 8:30 p.m. The Jimmy Dennis band will provide music. All DeMolay boys Rainbow girls or Masonic affiliated individuals are invited. Tickets available at the door.
J. C. Wright, 51, longtime Keokuk schools superintendent, was named the first Iowa public instruction chief under the new Board of Public Instruction. He will serve a four year term starting January 1 1955 with a $10 900 annual salary, pending Senate confirmation. Wright succeeds Miss Jessie Parker as the elective term ends January 1 after a five month nationwide search.
Oscar Dowell 76 of Richland died at 4 50 this morning at Jefferson county hospital in Fairfield after years of ill health. Services Sunday at 2 p m at Gould funeral home Richland with Rev. Raymond Walker in charge. Dowell born Kentucky October 14 1877. survived by three brothers and three sisters and nieces and nephews.
