Washington County post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars voted to insure 15 softball team members after Don Bealer was injured with a dislocated ankle and a four week layoff. Delegates were elected for the state encampment in Burlington June 27 28 29. Articles of incorporation for the post were completed with aims to buy a home and fund building. A cupboard was approved for guns and flags. Guest Raymond Maise spoke on wartime service. Progress was reported on a recreation program and a lighted field for softball pending site securing.

John Knopp of Washington reports the death of his mother Mrs Bertha Knopp at Mo line Iowa. Funeral services are expected Saturday at nine in St Joseph church East Pleasant Plain. Born March 16 1860 in Germany she married John Knopp in 1885 he died 186. They settled in East Pleasant Plain in 1880s. Surviving are son John J Knopp of Washington four daughters Frances Wilms Rose Gevock Elizabeth Drish Katherine Bleuel and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Former Resident Wyatt Helwick Dead at 68
Washington reports the death of Wyatt Helwick yesterday at Bellevue hospital in Muscatine. He was 68, had lived in Muscatine since 1920 after a long illness. Funeral services are set for Thursday at 2 PM at George M. Wittich funeral home with burial in a Muscatine cemetery. Helwick was born in Washington on March 21, 1879, to Elias and Emma Mauck Helwick.

Chicago Children to Come Early in July
A group of Chicago fresh air children will arrive in Washington in early July and hosts are urged to plan now. The farmer lived near Washington until 1920 when ill health forced retirement. Surviving relatives include brother Rush Helwick of Washington and sister Mrs. Harry Welch of Mariana Florida.
