Present Watch To John Winga At Y Board Meeting
John Winga received a presented watch from the Y M C A last evening in gratitude for ten years as president. Dave Rider gave the gift at the regular June meeting of the Y board. The Y has long supported Mr Winga’s community interests and guided his service. Norman White reported on the Chamber of Commerce summer recreation program with plans for swimming tennis ping pong horseshoes and softball. A bean dinner will open the season and children’s supervised activities will continue through summer. Board committees for the coming year were approved with names for each panel including PROGRAM PHYSICAL YOUNG MEN BOYS RELIGIOUS RURAL FINANCE ENDOWMENT HOUSE PUBLICITY MEMBERSHIP SOCIAL EDUCATIONAL INDUSTRIAL WORLD SERVICE PERSONNEL.

Plans for State Hospital Expansion in Iowa
Dr. L. P. Ristine, superintendent of the Mt. Pleasant hospital for the insane, told a Rotary club that Iowa will see improvements in state institutions as $8,000,000 is appropriated for expansion and better patient care. He traced surveys and study efforts, noted past funding gaps, and predicted the system’s weaknesses would be remedied with new medical staffs and available materials.

Yansky Funeral at Riverside Today
Riverside June 10 funeral services for Paul Yansky 39 were held at 3 pm at Riverside Trinity Methodist Church. Rev M O McKenzie presided and burial followed in Riverside cemetery. He died by self-inflicted wounds after a brain tumor illness. Surviving are his wife Christine and siblings Charles Richard Bessie Hraby.

Strikes Reduce Output of Coal
Wildcat walkouts by miners protesting labor legislation slashed soft coal production by over 62 000 tons daily in western Pennsylvania. More than 11 000 miners were idle as shut mines spread. William J. Hines of the United Mine Workers blamed Taft Hartley resentment and sought to end the stoppage while the UMW faced court injunctions.

Truman Enters Canada on Way to Ottawa Visit
President Truman crossed into Canada today stopping briefly at Rouses Point New York en route to Ottawa for a three nation state visit. Canadian secretary of state for external affairs Louis St Laurent and U S ambassador Ray Atherton greeted the president as the presidential special reached the border at 11 18 a m EDT. The stop allowed crew to board and service the train after the overnight run from Washington up the Hudson Valley.

Pay Increases For Chicago Workers Hit By CIO

Gas conversion completes with no ceremony in Washington
Natural gas entered the Iowa Southern Utilities system at 7 AM without fanfare as Mayor Glen Maes activated the changeover. 21 workers from Midwest Conversion began converting appliances in the city while line crews shift to the new higher heat content fuel. Residential work continues over several days with some homes using top burners until adjusted. costs are projected between 7000 and 40000 dollars for full conversion and high pressure lines.
