A column reports a lightning strike caused extensive damage to the Stevens shoe store building in downtown Ottumwa. Insurance adjusters estimate about 100000 dollars in damage to the Stevens building and smoke and water damage to the Warelam-Burns store. The bolt struck and punched a rear wall hole roughly 25 minutes before the fire was found.
Des Moines reports Directors of the Towa Farm Bureau Federation and the Iowa Farm Service Co. gave the green light for a commercial fertilizer manufacturing plant in Iowa. Allan Kline federation president and E. C. Campbell service company manager cited success of plants in Ohio and Indiana, each state operating five plants with annual distribution of 75,000 to 100,000 tons.
State War Manpower Director George D. Haskell said wartime ceilings are being removed in Shenandoah Creston Centerville Decoran Iowa City Fairfield Carroll Spencer Boone Mason City as local WMCs gain authority. He predicted further lifts as labor groups approve removals at Charles City Fort Dodge Keokuk Newton Ottumwa.
W W Twinam 75 dies Saturday at University hospital Iowa City after years of ill health. Services set for Tuesday at 2 PM at Crawfordsville United Presbyterian Church with Rev R M McCracken officiating. Burial in Crawfordsville cemetery. Survived by wife Jennet. son Merle. three daughters Veda Kempfiter Janet Kempffer Richard Sheldon. four grandchildren. a brother John Twinam.
A coalition of northern Democrats and Republicans forced the House to consider a bill outlawing the poll tax as a voting requirement in general and primary elections for federal offices. The measure, set for a vote tomorrow, faces strong opposition from six southern states that continue to impose the tax.

Mrs. Hattie S. Schilling 84 widow of Thomas Schilling died at 5 20 am at 314 West Jefferson. Born April 3 1861 in Helena Arkansas she lived in Indiana before moving to Ilona. Survived by son Palmer Schilling Washington grandson Ralph in the navy and brother Lee Badger Washington. Funeral 2 30 Wednesday at Sherman’s with Dr Fred E. Miller. Burial Woodlawn. she was a Methodist, American Legion Auxiliary and Royal Neighbors member.
Warren O. Morgan announces dairy and beef production subsidies under the county AAA. About 1,400 dairy producers received $29,974.25 for January to March milk and cream shipments. future June rates apply. Beef subsidies of 50 cents per hundredweight are forthcoming once forms arrive, with payments to cover sales from May 19 onward.
Mrs. Paul Benell of New York received a telegram Saturday from her husband Private Benell providing a brief wartime update. The message confirms his status and asks for news from home as details remain sparse.
Dr. Fred Miller, pastor of the Washington Methodist church, is re assigned for a third year here after a conference in Des Moines. Rev. Walter A. Smith joins as assistant. Several pastors are assigned to new charges including E E Voss Brigh ton and H W Muanater West Chester.
Between Sunday noon and this morning someone pried open the Mil waukee stockyards office and stole a table model Philco radio. The radio belonged to Guy Cole who offers a twenty dollar reward for the radio and information leading to the thief. Cole says the thief is at Holicran general hospital on Staten Island and will be moved soon to an army hospital near his home. He was a prisoner of war in Germany and was recently liberated.
London June 11 dispatches report Harry L. Hopkins left Paris for Washington without meeting General Charles DeGaulle. Earlier notices said the two were to confer in Paris likely on the Levant issue. An Exchange Telegraph dispatch confirms Hopkins departed without a meeting.
The Immanuel Lutheran church closed its vacation Bible school after a morning class session and picnic lunch at Sunset Park. It ran since May 28 with 49 pupils enrolled and good attendance despite bad weather.

Ellen Graber died shortly after noon at the county hospital after short illness. She was born November 3, 1906, in Trenton Iowa, and lived in the Wayland community before moving to Washington in 1944. Survived by brothers Leonard Graber and Elmer Graber and several sisters, with funeral arrangements pending.
