Marshalltown proprietor William Springer of the Please A food shop reported a break in on Wednesday night. He later learned the thief obtained only 24 dollars instead of the 105 he had originally told police.
The Knoxville Journal reports Senator Guy M. Gillettes secured a 2 to 1 renomination victory over Rep. Otha D. Wearin under the headline Roosevelt's Wearin out in Iowa. The Republican weekly highlights the contest as a key victory.
Five year old Mary Doyle died from burns after a party dress ignited by matches while she played with her sister Elizabeth, 13, on a Wednesday. Elizabeth fought to rescue Mary but the girl suffered burns over most of her body.
Des Moines unofficial returns show George A. Brown ahead of Lucy Hall for the Democratic nomination with a slim margin under 260 votes of 113,000 cast. The 35 percent threshold in the primary leaves outcome to the official canvass.
Sioux City report that Woodbury Supervisors vote to keep the county sewing room operating despite a fraud case. The unit was spared from liquidation after Clarence Coan and two merchants looted the poor fund of 14000 and were imprisoned. Under a new relief setup, 100 women will be employed.
An 11 year old girl, Marjorie Harris, burned to death when a kitchen range exploded during family dinner preparations. Her mother, Mrs. Leon Harris, rushed home from the garden but smoke and flames blocked entry as the room instantly ignited.
A. W. Rudnick extension service professor of dairy industry will receive a special banquet honor as he completes twenty five years of service to the college. Rudnick has led the college dairy program for the last fifteen years and is an ISU graduate of 1910.
Plans are complete for a two week Vacation Bible School at the Baptist church beginning Monday June 13. Classes run weekdays 9 to 11 30 a m with separate beginner and junior groups led by a staff of experienced workers and supervised by the pastor Rev Predmund. All local children are invited to attend.
Eight United States Army airmen, all from Denver, were killed when a Douglas D-18 bomber crashed in a hay field near DALAVAN Illinois during an electrical storm. Capt Richard B Reeve and seven others including First Lt Norman Ives Second Lt Thomas Langdon and Staff Sergeant Everett Murrah were among the dead. Witness Miss Ella Youle said lightning struck the aircraft as it circled the farm before a forced landing.
DeMolay will hold an officer election Monday at 7 30 p m at the Masonic Temple. The group plans state conclave practice next week for Iowa City events June 20 21 and 22 with an outdoor ceremony at the conclave.
Mr and Mrs Floyd Blanken horn of Crawfordsville shopped in town today Floyd Maxwell of Crawfordsville and Sam Marsh of Ainsworth were also seen shopping in Washington today.
Eleven new WPA construction projects totaling $659,947 in federal funds were authorized in Iowa to employ 229 men. The largest will hire 47 workers for street improvements in Keokuk. another will hire 30 for a Webster City school tunnel. Additional sites include Hampton, Lone Tree, Hardin County, Hinton, Jefferson, Walnut, Wellman, and Muscatine, with athletic fields, gym remodels, and park improvements.
Funeral services for Mrs Christian C Gingerich 77 were held at Timber church Kalona Iowa after she died of pneumonia and age related causes. She was a lifelong Amish Mennonite member active in church and Sunday school. Born January 17 1861 in Johnson County she married Christian C Gingerich January 21 1877 and the couple would have marked 69 years of marriage. Survived by six sons two daughters eleven grandchildren a sister and three brothers. She and her family homesteaded six miles north of Wellman enduring pioneer hardships.
Project notes show two line items total by Creston for water works. One involves 18 men costing $2,984 and the other 20 men costing $6,130 for improvements to buildings and grounds at the water works.
Rain fell in scattered Iowa areas with forecasts calling for more precip in 24 hours. Washington county corn stands suffer from excess moisture. temperatures ranged 81 in Inwood to 63 at night with a 75 high in Des Moines.
Five young people were injured when their car rolled over four times and landed in a pasture near Breda Iowa after driver John Foley 20 Hartington Nebraska lost control. Most seriously Breda Young 18 Mill Spring Kentucky suffered an arm fracture and back injuries. Also treated at St Anthony hospital were Foley with cuts and bruises Naryon Madsen 19 Hartington and Gene Hughes 17 Columbus.
DES MOINES June 10. The interim committee was told that renting statistical machinery may cost 50 000 to 60 000 dollars, a higher sum than hiring extra clerks. Otto H Muntz of the Greater Iowa committee questioned the plan and noted leasing from International Business Machines led by Thomas J Watson. State Comptroller MurTagh confirmed the lease. machines are used for records warrants in several departments.
Dr. Henry C. Hull marks four decades of medical practice in Washington all from the East Main street office he opened on June 10, 1898. He practiced with his father the late Dr. J. H. Full and is the town’s dean of physicians as the Hull family continues a long line of doctors dating back to Crawfordville.
President Roosevelt plans a vigorous nationwide campaign tour in July crossing the continent from Ohio to California. He will end with a Pacific coast fishing cruise via the Panama Canal. A Fort Dodge resident witnessed Iowa’s first hanging deaths of Allen Wheaton and John Mercer.

Franklin P. McCall, 21, confessed to kidnapping and murder of five year old Jimmy Cash. State's Attorney says grand jury will seek murder and kidnapping indictments and prosecutors push for the electric chair. McCall's wife Claudine McCall expresses shock as father-in-law reports she desires justice.
Judge Frank Beechly issues the decision in U. S. Buser v Amy M Work after a lengthy November term trial. The ruling finds no perjury or fraud in the U S Dewey claim of about 19069 against the J A Work estate and affirms the parties’ right to the deal. The Work estate owes over 7000 to J A Work’s estate with interest, funds to be turned over to temporary administrator T L Brookhart. Also noted is a divorce petition filed by Thora Reynolds against F A Reynolds with a January 1929 marriage and a request for property settlement and alimony. Max Lee starts work as clerk in the G A store.
