Iowa City column notes the University of Iowa alumni body now includes 38,078 degree recipients as of June 1, with 36,983 degrees granted since 1858. The living alumni total, plus 1938 graduates, is not yet finalized, but about 28,445 living and 3,812 deceased were counted before last Monday.
Mrs. Cecil Mc Gruder, 48, was wounded in the right arm when her seven year old nephew Elmer Cahill of Colon tried to pick up a gun on her husband’s dresser. Officers were notified of the accident.
Funeral services are set at the First Baptist church in Sioux City for Delosse Shull 80 a pioneer lawyer He belonged to Drake University first law class and served in the Milwaukee Railroad legal department for over 50 years His two sons Henry C and Deloss P were his business partners
Sidney voters approve a $10,000 water bond issue and authorize improvements after a prior defeat. The measure passed 157 to 122 for improvements and 152 to 180 for the bond, to fund a new reservoir and pumps.
Three Iowa students, George W. Webber of Des Moines John H. Bovis of Oelwein and Norman H. Pike of Sioux City, are among 60 scholars receiving Harvard University awards totaling 28350 dollars. The Harvard report confirms the Iowa winners.
The marriage of a United Airlines stewardess and co pilot, both former Iowans, was revealed when they stopped at Des Moines for lunch. The stewardess is Frances Crabb, formerly from Jamaica, and the co pilot is William Kent, formerly of Braddyville. Mrs Kent is resigning per United regulations after marriage.
Two young gunmen raided a Burlington store at 5 15 p m outside the business district seizing about 50 guns valued at 1000 dollars. They told proprietor Shorty Gamble they had to do it or face consequences, then loaded the firearms into a 1938 Plymouth with Minnesota plates.
Unsung fathers will be honored as communities across North America observe Father’s Day a week from Sunday. Local churches plan sermons and civic groups stage programs while six noted local fishermen, all fathers but one, depart for an annual fishing trip in the north. Gifts for fathers are being prepared in Washington stores amid rising interest in the observance.
DES MOINES June 9-15 The attempted renomination of Representative Otha D Wearin for Congress failed as no seventh district candidate met the 35 percent threshold. Wearin’s friends plan a July district convention to select a new candidate. Wearin declined to comment on a possible bid to himself or on the Senate race, saying he will not seek the honor under any circumstances. He called the race a great fight.
Wayne Norman announces a Friday evening session at the Washington YMCA for all township conservation committee members and their wives. The meeting will cover the 1928 AAA program, soil management practices, and administration questions, with insights from Iowa State College economists and County Agent Rovdabush on soil characteristics and crop fertility.
John Riley former Ainsworth boy and son of T Riley of Burlington died Monday night at Mercy hospital in Burlington. Funeral services planned for Saturday at 9 am. Born August 30 1882 in Ainsworth. Survived by father five brothers and three sisters Mae Norene Helen Dan Will Charles Byron Harold. Family well known in community and Ainsworth territory. Mother Anna Sullivan died years ago.

London dispatch reports a French steamship Brisbane set afire by a Spanish rebel airplane in Dania harbor, killing two British and two French sailors. The British steamer Isadora was bombed and taken out of service, with two other British ships set ablaze in Alicante harbor.
A Minnesota resident reported that of 91 cars met on a trip from Jewell to Garner to Spencer only 30 dimmed lights when asked. The driver of a car with Town license 72 1881 received a courtesy driving card from the Iowa State Safety council for courteous driving praised by R B Overly.
Washington board of education received a petition from 112 north town families and 182 adults asking for alternative housing for Heights school next year. The action follows a Heights PTA meeting where B J Lambert declared the building unsafe for school use. No board decision was made beyond receiving the petition.
Frank Pulsifer aged 77 died at eleven last night at the county home where he had resided since 1929. Funeral services will be Friday at ten at the Presbyterian church in Crawfordsville, Rev. N F Chapman pastor, with burial in Crawfordsville cemetery. Arrangements handled by Sherman’s funeral home. He was a son of George and Mary Bennett Pulsifer born April 27, 1861 and known as Dick Pulsifer. He never married.
Iowa City will host the summer session with more than 3,000 students set to study. Registration concludes Saturday and classes start Monday, marking the first term of the program.
The 75th Congress will launch the largest peace-time spending program in U S history with appropriations likely exceeding 12 billion and possibly over 15 billion. The Roosevelt administration aims to boost relief and employ producing expenditures while controlling ordinary outlays. A coordinated program by the Washington County Medical Society the Washington County Tuberculosis Association the Christmas Seal Committee and the county health unit aims to find unsuspected TB cases. The plan uses tuberculin skin tests followed by chest X rays for those testing positive with a three week independent study period to begin after August 5.
Miami reports that Franklin Pierce McCall, 21, led G men to the decomposed body of five year old Jimmy Cash found near an orchard less than a mile from the ransom drop. Hoover says McCall confessed writing ransom notes and receiving payoffs. state prosecutor Worley to review evidence. sheriff calls it a one man job.
President Roosevelt intends to visit Covington Kentucky on July 8 to speak with Senator Alben Barkley premier Senate leader. Secretary of State confirms an interstate swing starting July 7 through Kentucky Tennessee Oklahoma Texas and California. Mr and Mrs Frank Miller and daughter Sara Lu begin a month long automobile tour heading to Los Angeles the west coast Canada and back.
