Mrs. Francis Jones, 36, of Duncombe, died at Mercy hospital after severe kerosene burns from a kitchen fire explosion. Despite grave injuries she managed to reach a telephone and call for help.
Charles Kunch, 42, a farm laborer from near Toledo, waived preliminary hearing before U S Commissioner Arthur W Hyke and was bound over to the federal grand jury on a charge of selling liquor to an Indian ward of the United States. He posted a $500 bond.
About 100 Waterloo high school students volunteered to work in the northwestern Black Hawk county beet fields under the Food for Victory program. Leif Schreiner of the U S employment service said volunteers will meet in Waterloo and be transported to farms in trucks provided by the Waverly Sugar Beet Co.
Mr and Mrs H M Baker of Atlantic were notified by the war department Monday of the death of their son Corp Donald H Baker 23 in a train accident at Coleraine Ireland Saturday Baker's widow Virginia Henke of Atlantic survives.
Bobby Alteneder a Muscatine youth drowned in the Mississippi River Monday while swimming with Wayne Beverlin ten miles downstream. Police recovered the body about fifty minutes after the drowning near a grain elevator where they fished.
