Remains of Ancient Elephant or Mastodon Found in Iowa City
In Iowa City on June 9 the remains unearthed while digging a cistern 13 feet down were identified by Prof. Samuel Calvin as from either a mastodon or an elephant. Only ankle and foot bones were found, insufficient to distinguish the species. The bones date to about 20,000 years ago during a loess deposit era near the Iowa glacier, implying further excavations may uncover more remains.
