The rapid U.S. pullout from Vietnam continues at over 19,000 troops monthly, about 40 percent faster than needed to meet President Nixon's Dec 1 plan. If kept, fewer than 136,000 would remain by year end, short of the 184,000 target. Dean Earl Spangler jokes about his Carthage College title.
A local group gathered at the Captain's Table to charter the Optimist Club of Washington with Gene Neal of Optimist International presenting the charter. Delegates from Solon Iowa City Coralville and Cedar Rapids joined in electing officers Myron Shields president Rex Ray and Richard Collins as vice presidents and naming directors for terms.
The forecast calls for partly cloudy conditions tonight and Wednesday. A slight cooling trend expected with overnight lows around the mid 50s and daytime highs in the mid 70s.
Iowa Senate approves a 184 million two year appropriation for the Department of Social Services in a 41 to 2 vote. The plan exceeds the current biennium by 17.1 million but falls 7.4 million short of Gov. Ray’s recommended total.
Ira Morrison was appointed Sixth Judicial District Judge by Gov. Robert D. Ray, replacing retiree R. J. Yoder of Sigourney effective July 1. Morrison, 46, a Washington native and ex FBI agent, will resign as Washington County Attorney to assume the post with a $21,000 annual salary and will begin a round robin schedule in July.
Marcia Vittetoe, supervisor of the summer Youth Employment Service, appeals to citizens and employers to list available jobs for teens. The CAP program will again run the service covering Washington, West Chester, Brighton and Ainsworth with emphasis on matching youths to part time or full time work and following up on performance. The Washington Municipal Band will open its summer concert series on Wednesday evening in Central Park. The program features patriotic and classic pieces including God Bless America Voice of America March The Mississippi Suite Theme from Patton Mack the Knife Charter Oak Belmont Overture Alley Cat Finian s Rainbow The Oregon Trail Beautiful Savior Americans We The National Emblem March and The Star Spangled Banner. Concert starts at 8 p.m.
Iowa Liquor Control Commission suspends the Mayfair Club Inc license for 60 days for failing to immediately break bottles into a provided container. Suspension runs from June 14 to August 13.
An intercepted memo mentions Judge Ira Morrison and congratulates him while praising judicious jurisprudence. The note signs off with WEJ and appears as a playful acknowledgment of the judge. No further context or dates are provided.
Iowa lawmakers failed to reach 51 votes for a compromise tax plan funding 452 school districts after a lengthy caucus. Leaders on both sides criticize the proposal for insufficient property tax relief and question Gov. Ray's influence while a second conference committee could be named.
UPI reports two American GIs were killed and four wounded in a clash two miles south of the DMZ and six miles north of Cam Lo. South Vietnamese forces say they have killed 330 Viet Cong and North Vietnamese in the past four days as operations continue below the DMZ. Government losses for South Vietnam are six dead and 52 wounded. Also reported is a downed U.S. helicopter off Phu Quoc Island with one crewman wounded.
United Methodist Conference of Iowa adopted a resolution opposing violence in Southeast Asia and urging nuclear nonproliferation. The body representing 300000 Iowa Methodists urged amnesty for Americans who fled to Canada to avoid the draft and backed China’s admission to the UN alongside broader trade relations with the People’s Republic.
A local group forms the Washington County Development Center Inc to provide training and activity facilities for emotionally and physically handicapped residents. Executive director Gene DeFazio plans a program starting with ages 16 and up, including pre school support and post school activities, not replacing but supplementing existing services.
