Shallow-draft Navy patrol boats train for Mekong Delta duty
Vallejo based sailors train on 31-foot armor plated patrol boats built for shallow river work. Nineteen ships assigned to Mare Island and Viet Nam, with five in training. Vessels, similar to WWII PT boats, mount a .50 caliber bow turret and .30 caliber stern gun. Training uses blanks to avoid disturbing delta fishermen.
