Hue Buddhists defy government as troops move to city outskirts
In Hue, about 1,000 troops from three battalions were sent to the city’s outskirts as militant Buddhists called a crippling general strike. A loyal officer branded Thich Tri Quang a Communist but did not act. In Saigon moderate Buddhists regained control of anti government efforts, averting violence with Premier Ky for now. A US spokesman said two airborne and one marine battalion were deployed from Da Nang toward Hue’s Don Da center, with no immediate plan to enter the city. Brig. Gen. Phan Xuan Nhuan denounced Tri Quang and warned of arrest but backed off after Quang agreed to remove roadblocks. In Saigon, Ambassador Lodge met Ky for 50 minutes in a routine economic talk. Stores, schools, and restaurants closed by Buddhist radio orders. Police arrested 30 youths at a nun’s funeral. others proceeded after monks limited the procession. The Hue radio accused U.S backed forces of planning a massacre. The general strike marks a key step in the Buddhists’ nonviolent campaign.

Escapee from prison camp arrested in Washington area
An 18-year-old youth from Luster Heights Prison Camp near Mc Gregor who walked away Sunday was captured today in Washington by city police and sheriff's officers after a cross county search. Jerry L. Schrader of Ollie, serving a 10 year breaking and entering sentence, was taken into custody without resistance and returned to Muscatine after temporary lodging in the Washington County jail. A stolen car from Muscatine was recovered. A series of tip broadcasts from filling stations and highway patrols led to the arrest on Washington Street with Schrader surrendering meekly.
