Soybeans 94 Percent Planted in Iowa as Week Progresses

DES MOINES UPI Iowa reports 94 percent of soybeans planted by Monday, eight percent ahead of last year while the corn stand runs 93 percent normal. Rain eased drought in southwest and central areas. First alfalfa cutting begun statewide but hindered by showers, with 9 percent harvested versus 8 percent a year ago.

Washington council delays street resurfacing decision

Washington city council delayed final action on a proposal to surface streets in the business area after three bids were opened. The lowest bid totaled just over 28 thousand dollars. The council may reconsider a less costly surface after further study. The Planning Committee urged hiring professional consultants to update zoning ordinances, especially for multi unit housing and house trailers. The council instructed the city solicitor to expedite a new trailer use ordinance while approving minor sewer system improvements.

Israel Eyes Quick Victory In 48 Hours Conflict

London based military experts assess that victory or defeat in the Middle East could come within 48 hours as ground fighting replaces air actions. Israel plans a blitz aimed at driving Egypt from the Gaza Strip toward Suez, while Jordan and Syria are to be contained.

Band Concert Opens City Summer Series in Central Park

Des Moines IDPA Rinard executive secretary of the League of Iowa Municipalities warns that tax revision should relieve school taxes without shifting burdens to urban residents. Astronaut Edward Givens Jr Falls in Pearland Crash

Astronaut Edward Givens Jr., 37, was killed in a one car crash in Pearland near the Manned Space Craft Center. Two other men were seriously injured. Pearland Police Chief A H Casey said they appeared to have run into a dead end. Givens, an Air Force major, was among the latest astronauts selected but had not yet been assigned to a mission.

Tanks Rescue GIs Amid Blast At Central Highlands Base

UPI reports U S B 52 bombers hit five Communist infiltration routes in South Vietnam while American tanks moved into a blazing ammo and fuel dump to rescue trapped troops. One soldier was possibly killed and 15 wounded as a blaze consumed the facility north of Saigon.
