UN Forces Push Toward Iron Triangle in Korea
United Nations troops breached Chinese defenses along a 35 mile front in central Korea advancing toward the iron triangle. An army communique cited gains of about two miles with UN spearheads under nine miles from the target area as Chinese forces retreated from rock bunkers and dug in along ridges toward Chorwon Kumhwa and surrounding mountains.

National Guard Spends $49 857 in Mississippi Flood Control Efforts
Des Moines Iowa Gov William Beardsley announced the Iowa National Guard used about 249 857 for a month long flood duty along the Mississippi near Muscatine and Wapello. The report to the governor from Brig Gen Fred C Tandy shows 40 78 for pay and 8 874 for maintenance with around 600 guardsmen involved at various times and a peak of 375 on patrol and dike work.

Nine Thought Dead In Plane Take-Off
A four engined C-97 of MATS crashed on takeoff from Kelly Air Force Base. Six bodies were recovered immediately with no hope for survivors among the three remaining crew members. Sorrell Awarded 68 250 in Railroad Injury Suit
Sherman Sorrell of Washington received a 68 250 verdict in Freeborn County District Court at Albert Lea Minnesota for injuries from an Aug 10 1949 railroad accident while operating an electric motor car for Rock Island. He suffered a fractured skull and broken shoulder blade after the car left the track. Sorrell had 35 years with the railroad as a signal maintainer.

Roscoe P. Thoma, 65, Fairfield Iowa attorney, died today after an operation. He chaired Jefferson County Republican central committee and held offices in the state bar association including president in 1947 and 1948. A University of Town graduate and Harvard Law School alumnus, he was a special assistant attorney general in 1940.
United Presbyterian Home Starts Sherman Hall Addition
Carson Plumbing and Heating of Washington awarded the about $28,000 plumbing and heating contract for a new three story connecting building called Sherman Hall at the United Presbyterian Home in Monmouth Illinois.
