Iowa Farmhouse Tragedy Claims Hirres Family
Mrs Oliver Hirres, 31, and daughter Doris 3, burned to death in the farm home five miles southwest of Tipton. Mrs Hirresman reportedly tried to start a kitchen fire with kerosene. Husband heard an explosion, found wife and child engulfed in flames. Coroner A M McCormick said both died before aid arrived. Surviving are Doris’ siblings Glenn 8 and Gladys 9.

Marion A. Powell a 59 year old Des Moines painter was sentenced by Judge Earl Newcent at Guthrie Center to life at hard labor in Fort Madison penitentiary for the murder of Mike Slykhuis a Knoxville former. Powell with his head down was calm while the sentence was pronounced.
