Pete H. McCarthy, 72, of Dubuque, a member of a prominent local family, is indicted in the northern Iowa district on three postal law violations for sending libelous remarks about President Roosevelt through the mails. The charges allege the remarks were typewritten on postcards bearing McCarthy’s name.
Eugene Van Nest aged 13 son of Mrs. C H Phipps of Iowa City and a caddy at the Country club drowned in the Iowa river near the golf course north of town. Friends early saw him struggle after diving in and two men Evan Tallman and Jack Evans failed in a rescue attempt. His body was recovered about an hour and a half later.
United States Circuit Judge John J. Parker urged Iowa lawyers to be more businesslike at the Iowa State Bar Association convention in Des Moines. Parker, a senior appeals court judge, spoke at the Hotel Fort Des Moines dinner meeting.
In Eldora the Froning Grain Co elevator foundation failed near the M and St. L railway, causing oats and corn to spill from the sides. No cause was immediately determined and no fire or explosion occurred. Covering was laid over the grain to protect it from weather.
Dean Lowe aged 19 was killed when lightning hit a fence then the tractor he drove in a Louisa county farm four and a half miles northeast of Columbus Junction. He had just finished his first year at Carleton College and was visiting. He was taken to Muscatine where efforts to revive him failed. Survived by a brother Ralph Jr. and parents Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Lowe.
A strong wind and rainstorm in Burlington caused heavy damage in the downtown and residential areas. Store windows were blown in, hundreds of trees and limbs fell, and a metal water tank top was lifted and hurled about 500 feet. A flagpole was struck by the top as it came down.
The rationing office reports 1892 canning sugar applications granted to as many families since the new allotments began. County towns added hundreds more certificates with over 200 from Kalona. No Saturday work. tires and bicycles are handled in the forenoon. office hours remain nine to eleven and two to four for canning sugar next week.
Thurman Arnold warned that international cartels seek a negotiated peace to continue doing business with Germany. He told the National Federation of Sales Executives that Munich terms and cartel price controls left America strained in materials and industry even after Pearl Harbor.
All residents who want sugar for canning may visit the rationing board at Supt. Calkins home from seven to nine on Monday Tuesday and Wednesday evenings next week and continuing through the canning season.
Weather officials forecast thunderstorms will persist through tonight and into today across the state with a note that temperatures will be slightly cooler.
Burlington Trailways announces a complete new schedule effective next Wednesday June 10 for buses through Washington. Westbound departures shift earlier and later across the day with 5:37 am 4:28 pm and 8:50 pm. Eastbound service adds 1:19 pm 4:02 pm and 8:48 pm with the midnight run discontinued. Increased travel demand is blamed on tire rationing driving more patrons to buses.
Brigadier General Glenn C. Haynes 66, longtime warden at the Iowa State Penitentiary since 1933, died after a long illness at Fort Madison. A WWI hero and former state auditor, he served in Spain and World War I, earned the Distinguished Service Cross, Croix de Guerre citations, and worked under General MacArthur in the Rainbow division. Burial set for Centerville, Iowa.
The navy announced that 46 crew members from three United Nations merchant ships sunk by axis submarines have been landed at a gulf port. All crew on two vessels, a Norwegian freighter and a British cargo ship, were saved. Ten of 35 aboard an American merchantman perished when a single torpedo sank the ship in two minutes.
Workmen resumed the search for additional bodies in the wreckage of a shell loading building at the Elwood ordnance plant. The explosion, part of a $30,000,000 facility, may have killed more than twenty.
Summer classes will start next Monday in the high school building. The board prohibits typing, mechanical drawing, and vocal music unless at least ten students enroll in each subject. Students should report at 1 30 Monday to rooms 6, 4, and 12 respectively. Advance registration is not required.
A marriage license was issued at the Riverside court yesterday to Ivan Matthew Shradel and Viva Anne Knebel both of Riverside.
A large rainfall drenched Washington last night and today totaling 1.60 inches. Showers began early evening with additional rain around five this morning. Temperatures cooled after highs near 96 and a low of 65. A lightning strike shocked Mrs. Oscar Collett but no serious harm. Basements flooded lightly, crops benefited.
Dean Hartland Meats of Washington junior college reports that Clifford Blecha has finished his training at Pensacola and will be sent to Norfolk for further instruction. United States forces report heavy damage to at least two battleships two aircraft carriers two cruisers and two transports in a Pacific naval battle as Japanese ships withdraw under pursuit. Admiral Nimitz says enemy damage is far out of proportion to US losses and hints at a turning point in the war.

Judge Jens Bollrup of Waterloo presides with Lueder and local committee members arranging classes and a noon basket dinner. A judging contest for men women and juniors is led by J H Donald.
In Washington residents witnessed a noon test of the long idle whistle at the Iowa Southern Utilities plant. The device sounded for about a minute, restoring memories of its historic use as an air raid and fire alarm for the town and surrounding countryside.
May cigarette tax receipts reached 191 500 dollars up from April but down 4 024 from May 1941. The four cent beer tax yielded 95 768 dollars in May, down 5 751 from April, though May beer revenue was 8 400 higher than May last year.
Enlisted students completing aviation training courses are joining naval operating units as aviation pilots. Training mirrors that of cadets and student officers per changes in ratings by the Bureau of Naval Personnel.
