Drouth grows serious in eastern two thirds of Iowa as reed forecasts corn acreage return to 1925 and 1916 totals. About 900 reporters report June 1 corn condition at 95 percent, 6 points above average and 22 above last year.
John S. N. and crew of the monoplane Friendship awaited a favorable crosswind at Trepassy bay to begin their trans Atlantic attempt to England. The flight, linked to Miss Mabel Bell, aims to race across the Atlantic.

At a regular meeting of Leon Beatty Post American Legson yesterday evening, plans were advanced for the Legion sponsored July 4 celebration. Committees will meet soon to detail arrangements while local businessmen have contributed 750 dollars to cover expenses the post will incur.
Washington June 6. Gov Alfred E. Smith enters the Houston convention with about 600 first ballot votes, 134 short of a nomination. Two rival blocs oppose him Reed and Simmons Heflin, while a Texas uninstructed delegation and other uncommitted groups could shift the balance. Reed’s friends expect over 100 votes on the first ballot, with Missouri 36 and additional uninstructed delegates from Illinois Pennsylvania Utah and West Virginia. Hull anchors 24 from North Carolina and a native son slate. Smith leadership expects support from Pomereno 48 Ohio and Hitchcock 16. Overall uncommitted votes total about 1234 with 40 Texas and 24 Alabama not expected to go Smith. Target near 700 votes possible. last 34 not a focus.

An all day picnic June 8 at Sanitary Dairy Washington features dairy barn tours judging cows dinner and a short program before an evening Center High School meeting with Johnson on dairying and contesting work.
DES MOINES June 6 Governor John Hammill returned to Des Moines to receive hundreds of congratulatory messages since his victory in the primary. Late figures indicate his vote will exceed 200,000 with the governor’s total around 350,000, slightly below earlier predictions.
