Jarrard pleads guilty on bonded warehouse license charge

Clarence W. Jarrard owner of Jarrard Feed & Supplies pled guilty in Magistrate Court to receiving and storing grain without a bonded warehouse license. Magistrate Robert O. Hammer fined him $50 after the plea. The charge was filed by Edmond L. Carter, Iowa State Commerce Commission inspector.

Red Cross swim program set to start at Washington pool

Volunteers meet at the Municipal Pool to plan the Red Cross summer learn to swim program for Washington County residents and students. The official opening is June 16 with 45 minute classes over six weeks, with schedules by last name and area.

Street lights short circuited in downtown disturbance

Supt. Marvin Glandon of the Water and Light Department said iron light poles near the short circuit were likely charged with 10 000 volts when the malfunction occurred. Crews have opened eight inch pavement to reach the conduit and will replace it as they continue repairs downtown.

Rail wreck near Rubio halts trains and buries generator

Crews toiled to clear seven derailed cars after a Milwaukee Road freight left its tracks near Rubio. A 615,000 pound electrical generator bound for Texas sank in mud and required heavy salvage work. damage estimates await tests. Rail traffic rerouted via Rock Island lines. a derailed car had run off track for 24 miles.

Iowa governor vents on magistrate appointment ruling

Gov. Robert D. Ray said an Attorney General ruling that all Iowa magistrates were illegally appointed is accurate but implementing it would cause a mass 250 appointments headache. The 3 year old abolition of justice of the peace shifted power to commissions and district judges, a move Turner says unconstitutional. Ray seeks further rulings on ouster actions and indefinite service.

Damaging Winds Sweep Midwest With Tornadoes Reported

United Press International reports a system of damaging winds and tornadoes moving from the upper Midwest to New York state on Wednesday. The storms damaged trailers and homes, toppled trees and power lines, and caused multiple tornado touchdowns in Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin with no injuries noted.

Blair House project receives unanimous Bicentennial endorsement

Blair House Foundation representatives reported to the Iowa American Revolution Bicentennial Commission in Des Moines that Blair House gained unanimous support and is now eligible for matching grants. Final action will occur June 26 with Blair House listed as an official Bicentennial Project and potential fund raising and preservation decisions still pending.
