UN truce negotiators at Panmunjom refuse to compel Red prisoners to return to Communism and warn enemy negotiators their demand is unacceptable. Maj. Gen. William K. Harrison stresses no forced repatriation and proposes screening prisoners with Communist observers after an armistice.
Judge J G Patterson ruled in favor of J F Rittenhouse against Oral Conference Norman in district court. The decision grants possession of the farm involved and a judgment of SEbo 15 against Baldrige and Bailes. Hutchison represented the plaintiff. the defendant was represented by another attorney.
Clif ford Curtis, driver in a west Columbus Junction highway crash, was bound over to the next term of Louisa County District Court after a morning hearing. Bond set at 500 dollars. Charge: operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Curtis backed from a filling station onto the highway, colliding with a car driven by Jerry Trimble of Burlington. Cecil Simmons, a passenger in Curtis car, was released from Washington County Hospital after treatment.
Leon Beatty American Legion post at the city hall discussed plans for their annual officer election and a July chicken supper. The meeting also featured talk of a public service project.
Senate completed action on a compromise appropriations bill funding pay checks for hundreds of thousands of federal workers. The measure passed by voice vote after the House approved it. The bill now goes to the president.
John Phlieger chairman of the Washington County chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis reports on a six state polio conference held in Chicago with DBastl Connor NF president. He says the March of Dimes work will pay off but warns polio remains a national threat this year.
Rev DeKoning recovering at St Luke's Hospital Cedar Rapids after knee cap removal and leg injuries from a recent accident. He reports progress in a wheelchair and plans to continue recovery with crutches before eventual return to Washington. doctors say driving will be restricted for at least three months.
The first bargaining talks between major steel company presidents and CIO Steel Workers officials began in the White House office of John R. Steelman amid the nationwide steel strike. President Truman said he does not plan to seek new authority, though Congress may want it.
Plans are underway for a building bee at the Lake Darling Youth Center on Saturday June 14. Carpenters and other volunteers will donate a day of labor to erect a 34 by 60 foot building in a single day starting at 7 30 in the morning. The foundation is laid and materials will be on site when work begins.
Keith Vetter, a Washington insurance man, will head the 1952-53 Community Chest drive succeeding Robert Da. Washington attorney, reappointed as chairman. The Chest board approved campaign committees and ward leaders across four wards with general and colonel roles, plus business-block and publicity committees.
Dwight D. Eisenhower, in his first news conference as a civilian candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, frames a liberty versus Socialism platform. He says he is in general accord with the Lincoln Day mid term platform adopted by Republicans in 1950. The 45 minute briefing drew broad media attendance in Abilene.
The Washington Saddle club sponsors a Sunday trail ride on June 8 at Lyte Lowe farm near Crawfordsville. Two rides start at 10 in the morning and another at noon, with a picnic and a public horse show to follow. A Sperry ride two weeks earlier drew TH horses and ponies.
Two men were brought before Justice of the Peace H. M. Putnam this morning on driving charges. Richard Powers, 42, bound over to the grand jury under a $300 bond for operating a vehicle while intoxicated. He was arrested at 20 o clock by highway patrolmen and sheriff's officers. John Patrick Strohman, 17, was fined $100 and costs on a reckless driving charge.
Figures show Washington County disbursed 11 560 in Social Security payments last month. About 240 wage earners and 2 140 went to widows and children, with the program providing survivor insurance after the death of a wage earner.
Pearson joins Fields Motor Company as salesman after relocating from West Chester. He has long garage experience dating to World War I and previously sold cars with Tink Schenefelt at Schenefelt Studebaker garage. He and his wife have three married sons and plan to move to Washington when housing is available. He enjoys hunting and fishing.
The first week marks nearly six years since Elses Brown opened Courtesy Corner opposite the State theater after Army discharge. The shop, formerly run by Mdsall Brow and Don Orr, is now operated by Nd with help from Vaughn McArtor and Jerry Jolson offering lubrication washing polishing tire and battery service and a full line of Cities Service products and auto accessories.
Artemas Brown, YMCA secretary, reports that tonight's heavyweight bout between Walcott and Charles will be shown on the YMCA lobby TV. All interested persons are welcome to view the fight at 8 p.m. within the YMCA.
Parents are reminded that the annual Union Daily Vacation Bible School sessions at Lincoln School will begin Monday morning. All children of Bible school age are welcome, regardless of church membership.
Drilling for oil along the Gulf Coast uncovered sulphur unexpectedly. A handful of salt domes have yielded rich deposits, one supplying twelve million tons. Port Sulphur and Newgulf stand as model towns built by Gulf Coast sulphur, with the latest major find at the tip of the Mississippi delta.
The Christian church in Washington completes installation of a Conn Sonata electronic organ by Lorden Music company with Maas chimes. John Yousline will give the dedication recital in Central Park, with Robert Everetts as soloist. The organ, one of Iowa’s largest electronic installs, replaces the old pipe organ and will be heard in the downtown district.
The YWCA will run a summer program starting the week of June 23 with plans for Bible school swim periods on Tuesday and Friday afternoons and a 4 to 5 pm regular swim block for all age groups. Mixed swimming and family night efforts will occur, plus lessons led by Miss Berry and Miss Whitehead and stress on age based divisions and desk supervision by Miss Logan.
Reports to Charles Snyder, Washington county sheriff, indicate burglars active in at least two more places this week. A filling station at Olds was entered with four dollars in cash and a flashlight stolen. In Swedesburg, the Tower Garage was burglarized with nineteen wrenches, five dollars in pennies, a roll of nickels and three dollars from a Coca Cola machine taken. Officers continue searching for clues.
The United States protested to the Soviet Union over the blockade of Steinstuecken East Berlin by West Berlin authorities tightened security after a spate of Communist shootings and kidnappings. Cecil B. Lyon delivered the démarche to Soviet Headquarters noting the district of 160 residents has been cut off from food and supplies since Sunday. It followed a U S protest a day earlier over the wounding of an American patrol soldier by an East German policeman.
Des Moines and central Iowa see fair, partly cloudy conditions this afternoon with highs from the mid 70s to mid 80s. Strongest showers possible in the far north tonight and Friday night with lows around 60. Friday highs near 80 to 86. Weekend looks fair and warm.
