Des Moines reports the Iowa fair is two and a half months away. All county agricultural exhibit spaces are booked. A R Corey state fair board secretary notes about $22,000 more in farm premiums this year, lifting total cash prizes to over $98,000.
The Dain Manufacturing Co. of Ottumwa now employs 300 workers and operates at capacity for the first time in years. Officials cite unusual demand for hay machinery, accelerated since May by heavy Midwest rains, as the reason for the pickup.
The ninety third annual Iowa Universalist convention will gather in the Waterloo Universalist church on Wednesday Thursday and Friday. Rev Dr Effie McCollum Jones of Webster City will preside as president.
Fairfield scene reports history professor Dr. Fred K. Hinkhouse of 11 years named dean to fill a three year vacancy. Parsons College also announces completion of raising 43000 dollars to satisfy indebtedness to local banks, with mortgage notes burned at a luncheon ceremony.
Des Moines Gov Clyde L Herring rejects reports he will appoint four women to the Iowa liquor commission. He notes he did consider offering the post to Mrs Anna B H Lawthern of Dubuque formerly on the state board of education.
Lester Curran formerly of Mason City travels to Australia with a herd of 19 cattle chosen from diverse U S breeds. He plans to establish similar cattle varieties once he arrives.
Two suspects who abducted a Missouri sheriff and deputy near Rockport Missouri released them near South Sioux City and fled. A money bag bearing Mt Ayr state bank name was found in their car containing about six dollars in coins. No report of a Mt Ayr robbery reached Iowa investigators.
A farewell luncheon in Iowa City honored Edward A Chap pell as he prepares to leave next week to become publisher of the Chillicothe Gazette. Kiwanis club members hosted the event with Jay J. McNamara Ed Rose and Prof Forest Cbn signing brief speeches.
An operation to restore motherhood possibility in a sterile 30 year old woman was done at Mercy hospital clinic in Des Moines. It was the first such operation in Des Moines and perhaps Iowa. Over 250 Iowa physicians attended the clinic opening as a $50 000 modernization program nears completion at the hospital.
Jean Farnell is paroled from Fort Madison prison. He finds his mother waiting at the foot of Prison Hill where she has lived for eleven years, waiting and working for his release.
Burglars broke into St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Raymond and stole a small amount of offering money. Authorities investigate the burglary and review security footage for leads.
Harold M. Cooper former chairman of the state liquor control commission was acquitted by directed verdict in Des Moines on a charge of interfering in an election. Judge Russell Jordan upheld the defense motion after prosecutors failed to provide direct evidence of a crime.
The Century of Progress in Chicago last year spurred European travel to America and steamship lines and agencies expect more foreign visitors this summer. About 60 percent more travelers from France Germany and Italy are anticipated this year compared with 1984. The display highlights attractions appealing to foreign visitors.

Elmer Brewer and Patrick Griffin were executed on the scaffold at the state prison in Fort Madison Iowa. The first pair hanged in Iowa history the men were pronounced dead within minutes of the 9 26 p m start. Witnesses included two women the first female spectators at an Iowa execution. The men were convicted in January 1934 of first degree murder in the killing of Deputy Sheriff W L Dilworth of Black Hawk county during a confrontation at a shack near Waterloo.
Fort Madison Iowa notes that Iowa has executed sixteen people for murder prior to today including several named cases from 1834 to 1923 and the 1918 Camp Dodge executions of Fred Allen Stanley Grammell and Robert Johnson. The list cites victims and defendants across numerous counties and years.
