Police arrested William W. Martin, 48, for disorderly conduct when a tomahawk dangled from his belt. He convinced authorities he was not on the warpath, saying the hatchet was a tool of his trade and was acquitted.
A four year American Cancer Society study of 188 000 men shows higher death rates among smokers than non smokers with risks rising with total cigarette use. One half to one pack daily raises deaths 70 percent, two or more packs 123 percent, and lung cancer deaths ten times higher in smokers.
Frank Sondag, 78, died at 11:25 p.m. Monday at Keokuk County Hospital after a Sunday admission. He was born January 1879 near Harper and married Elizabeth Klett on July 4, 1907. Survived by wife, eight children, 22 grandchildren, six great grandchildren. Funeral Thursday at 2 p.m. Powell Funeral Home South English, Rev. P. J. Blosser. Burial Bethel Cemetery southwest of Harper.
Washington's Municipal Band will launch its regular summer series with a Wednesday evening concert at 8 p.m. in Central Park. Bill Sander, new director, previously led bands at Columbus Junction and Cotter and coordinated with the city’s school music program. About 35 musicians will perform. Wayne Brock chairs the group with Max Lee as vice president, Terry Mathers secretary, and Milo Steele Jr. treasurer.
Washington County 4 H girls start their annual session at the Lake Darling Youth Center at 2 p m with campers listed including Robin Bueghly Bonnie Campbell Mary Crish and many others. Camp runs through Thursday with boys taking over Thursday to Saturday and includes counselors lifeguard and camp directors among named participants.
About 720 high school juniors at Hawkeye Boys State in Camp Dodge vote for new state officers. Mike Glenn 16 Sidney and Charles Jons 17 Sac City lead the Federalist and Nationalist tickets respectively amid campaigns urging reapportionment of the Legislature.
Chairman McClellan ordered contempt proceedings against Dave Beck Jr and Joseph McEvoy after they invoked the Fifth Amendment repeatedly in response to questions about the Teamsters union payroll and relations. Beck Jr declined to say if he knew his father, invoking the Fifth 130 times. McEvoy did so 90 times. The group warned a contempt citation could reach the Senate and then the Justice Department for prosecution with up to one year in jail and a $1000 fine.
The United States transfers Army Specialist William S. Girard to Japan for trial on manslaughter after he shot a Japanese woman at a U.S. firing range. Dulles and Wilson cite US Japan status of forces and favor Japanese jurisdiction. Girard faces 2 to 15 years if convicted under Japanese law.
Washington dry cleaning shops announce free cleaning and pressing of American flags from now through June 12 to honor Flag Day. Cooperating cleaners include Martins Modern Cleaners The Washington Cleaners and Watson Sta Nu Cleaners ensuring flags are clean and bright for June 14 celebrations.
Washington city hall heard plans for a new municipal swimming pool will be submitted to a joint council and plan commission meeting on Tuesday night June 11. Stanley Engineering Co. of Muscatine is completing plans and bids may be sought after a public hearing. The council also signed a contract with Iowa Southern Utilities Co. for electrical power at the new sewage disposal plant site. They indicated no objection to using certain lands in Washington for a proposed army reserve training center, pending location clarity.

Des Moines reports show Iowa tax revenue surging across major taxes in the first five months of 1957. Individual income tax receipts reach 23.15 million, $3 million above last year, with 692000 returns averaging 47.44 dollars per filer. Sales, corporation, and use taxes also rise, adding up to a cushion for Gov. Loveless and a near steady-year outlook.
Washington County hospital board discussed multiple improvements and added three doctors to the medical staff. They tabled plans to turn William Perry Wells park into a recreation center. They approved x ray dark room enlargement and new developing equipment, plus Dr. Walz and Dr. Greenwall as consultants. The board approved Dr. Cross supervising hospital laboratory and awarded coal supply to Washington Lumber & Fuel Co. Operating room charges were increased effective July 1 to reflect current costs.

Depart Seattle July 23 with stops in Alaska Tokyo Hong Kong India Pakistan Iraq Iran Syria Lebanon Jordan Palestine Turkey Greece and Italy ending in Rome September 14 and arriving New York September 15.
The Iowa Highway Commission will hire three independent real estate appraisers to value the Waterloo garage site and related right of way purchases. The move follows previous scrutiny by a legislative committee and Gov Loveless. Wilbur Prentice, a Waterloo agent, sold the garage site at a $10,000 profit last December.
L C Swank of Muscatine was hospitalized in fair condition after a scaffold gave way at a Mobil oil service station remodeling job in Columbus Junction. He fell nine feet to the ground while part of a crew working on the station structure.
The Supreme Court ruled 4 2 that under the Clayton Act a suit may be brought whenever there is a reasonable likelihood of monopoly, even for historic stock deals. The decision targets Du Pont GM and holds the law applies to stock in a customer as well as a rival. It could widen anti trust actions against merged firms.
Washington County VFW Post 2808 sponsors a June 8 dance to raise funds for an Iowa crippled children's camp. The project seeks $185,000 for the main building plus $75,000 from the state VFW for construction. The camp will include cabins, therapy center, infirmary, amphitheater, chapel, nature building, boat house, and staff housing to aid severely handicapped Iowa children.
Fire at the Diamond Horseshoe bowling alley in Ottumwa Iowa caused about 30000 in damage. Investigators had not determined a cause and crews brought the blaze under control around 5 p m. The facility sits in the main business district.
The Washington YWCA announces a 10 week summer swim schedule starting June 18 for girls and women. Registration is open now with fees of 3 and 3.50 dollars respectively. Ruth Simpson leads the program with various Tuesday and Friday time slots and multiple age based classes at the YWCA pool.
Hank Bloomgarden, 28, public relations adviser from New York, won $92 500 on NBC Twenty One after a rematch with James Snodgrass. Bloomgarden previously earned $52 000 and faced a decision to risk or keep his total as the show resumes next week.
Rev Bernard L Friesen of Chicago formerly of Canada will become pastor of Fern Cliff Evangelical Free Church. He starts in July. Rev L D Fast who led the church since its organization will leave for a pastorate at Albert City Iowa.
