Iowa voters gave Senator Smith W. Brookhart a large margin over Horton KB Sweet in the Republican senatorial primary. The total statewide vote neared 350 000 with continued counting and several races undecided.
Miss Helen Cole and Charles Carter emerged from three days in the Wawayanda mountains New Jersey after a failed attempt to live primitively. They were found cooking mountain weeds in a tomato can as their evening meal, with Cole admitting she caught no rabbits. The yellow dress she wore on departure was torn to shreds.
Burton E. Sweet, defeated Republican Senate nominee, asserts Brookhart’s principles cannot prevail over the people of Iowa. He notes carrying seven of eleven districts and commends supporters while urging continued efforts against radicalism in state government.
The House approved a deficiency appropriation bill totaling 158 196 000 dollars with a first year cost of the soldier's bonus at 191 9438 000 dollars. The measure was sent to the Senate for action.
Former Attorney General Daugherty notified the senate committee he will not testify or be represented further. Fred W. Upham of Chicago will relinquish his post as treasurer of the Republican National Committee after years of service. The announcement came after talks with William M. Butler and veteran campaign organizer P J Coolidge. Upham cites poor health and signals a full reorganization with others aging out, including Secretary George B L Lockwood and Chairman Adams.
Sansovino, the Earl of Derby's colt, won the Epsom Derby by six lengths on a slow wet track. The race finished in two minutes 4 2-5 seconds, 12 1-5 seconds off the record, with jockey Weston guiding the winner.
Des Moines June 4 The state Republican convention to choose a candidate for governor and auditor will probably be held July 22 B B Burnquist chairman of the state central committee announced today The date was to be finalized later this afternoon The Monday primary failed to nominate those offices The tentative date for the judicial convention is July 29.
Washington June 4. An agreement was reached to postpone consideration of the Muscle Shoals inquiry until the next session of Congress. Senators investigating the matter agreed to defer action at this time.
Akyab Burma June 4 The Portugese aviators Lieutenants Beros and Pacs who are attempting a flight from Lisbon to Macao China arrived here today from Calcutta.
The American round the world air expedition reached Shanghai as two planes diverged from the Seattle. Major Frederick Martin and Sergeant Alvorvey faced mishaps while Chicago stalled at Kagoshima harbor. Lieutenant Lowell H. Smith aims to cross the China Sea to Shanghai pending weather and repairs.
In Kansas City on June 4 1924 thousands of Shriners celebrated the second day of the Golden Jubilee convention. Nobles enjoyed a festive procession as the Imperial Council met to decide posts in the Imperial Divan. The 1925 convention city selection is expected Thursday.

Police investigate the murders of Wm. Oberst a street car motorman 40 and John McLanchlin a conductor. Initial theory suggests an attempted hold up with Oberst resisting and the assailant fleeing.
Fred Smith of New York City, chairman of the Citizens Committee of One Thousand for law enforcement, denounces those who say Volstead enforcement cannot succeed. He cites Dr. Nicholas Murray Butler and college presidents, warning the good name of the country is at stake in the attack on the eighteenth amendment.
Washington judge Gilbert O Nations was chosen as the American party standard bearer with Charles H Randall of Los Angeles named as running mate. The party adopted a platform on law enforcement immigration outlawry of war and polygamy and planned nationwide campaigns and alliances with the Ku Klux Klan. Governor Pinchot and Congressman Upshaw were also nominated before a mixed reception to possible amalgamation with the Prohibition party.
Grand jury resumes hearings on the kidnapping and murder of Robert Franks. Richard Loeb and Nathan Leopold Jr. have not signed confessions, while State’s Attorney Crowe presses for murder indictments. High security guards and strict jail controls are in place amid fears of self harm.
