Town Attorney General Turner Faces 50 Mile Bike Ride Challenge

Des Moines reports that Iowa officials including Gov. Ray and three top state officers express confidence that Attorney General Richard Turner can ride 50 miles in a Des Moines bike rally for Central Iowa Bike Trail Day. Turner cautions about a remote possibility, while supporters pledge donations per mile to fund bike paths at the Iowa State Fairgrounds.

Iowa seeks state help to curb drug trade with undercover task force

Des Moines IA UPI Iowa narcotics chief Wil Penberthy said he will ask the 1973 legislature to fund a four to six man undercover task force to target heroin cocaine and amphetamine trafficking in priority areas He and Public Safety Commissioner Michael Sellers met federal officials who expect continued federal focus on foreign imports and large distributors while urging state action to “knock Iowa's drug problem out of the box.”

Sheriff patrol car damaged in Keota crash

Sheriff Don Robertson's 1972 patrol car sustained about 1500 in damage around 1 45 am on West Second Street in front of the county jail. Eddie Dean Rimer 21 of Keota drove the other vehicle causing estimated 350 damage. Rimer is held in the jail after city police charged intoxication striking a parked vehicle and failure to report an accident.

Nuisance Buffalo Gnats Flare In Washington County

Buffalo gnats are prevalent again in Washington County this spring. Their bites cause significant swelling in sensitive areas, with several reports of incidents. County extension director Jim Frier notes the gnats are more numerous after wet springs.

Hijacker Gains 500000 Ransom Then Heads to Algiers

A calm hijacker seized a jet on the West Coast, obtained 500000 dollars and a longer-range aircraft in San Francisco, released 40 hostages in New York, refueled, and departed for Algiers with a female companion aboard. The incident marked the second hijack of the night.

H Rap Brown Given Maximum Five Year Sentence

In New Orleans UPI reports H Rap Brown received the maximum five year sentence and a $2000 fine for carrying a rifle on a plane from New York to Louisiana. Brown remained defiant as Judge Lansing L Mitchell noted his prior history and Brown’s supporters clashed with marshals outside court.

Local man charged after chase Friday

A Washington man Mike Mondia 25 was charged with drunkenness and seven traffic violations after a high speed auto chase. He led police at speeds up to 115 mph through multiple streets before ending seven miles south on Coppock Road. Mondia faces charges of reckless driving stop sign violations speeding in 30 and 25 mph zones failing to stop for an emergency vehicle and is held in the county jail pending a justice court appearance.

Wallace narrows weight loss after dirty bullet infection

Gov. George C. Wallace has weakened further due to infection from a dirty bullet and has lost 20 pounds, as surgeons report. The Washington Post also notes the FBI finished its Bremer probe with no evidence of a conspiracy.
