The Washington YMCA launches a six day a week summer program for boys and men with four daily swimming classes and additional activities. Mrs William Jones 77 native of Denmark died suddenly at about 6 p m Monday at her Letts home. Funeral services are set for 2 p m Thursday at Stacy Funeral Home Columbus Junction with Rev Burris P Moore officiating. Burial will be Indian Creek Cemetery. She was born January 4 1881 in Denmark, daughter of Andrew and Margaret Nielsen. She married William Jones after moving to the United States. Murray Wins Right to Become GOP Candidate for Governor
William G. Murray, a 54 year old college professor who quit Iowa State College, won the Republican gubernatorial nomination in Iowa. He defeated Lt. Gov. William H. Nicholas, with 108,357 votes to 83,369 as 2,378 of 2,486 precincts reported, securing a lead never below 53 percent. Murray will face Democratic Gov. Herschel C. Loveless next fall.

Norman Merz Wins Marquette Athletic Scholarship
Norman Merz, 1957 Washington High School graduate and son of Mr and Mrs Lester Merz of route one Washington, earned an athletic scholarship at Marquette University Milwaukee Wisconsin for 1958 59. He played tackle for the Devils and earned honorable mention on the Little Six and All State teams. He served six months active duty in the U S Army at Aber deen Proving Grounds and Fort Leonard Wood and attended armament maintenance helpers school in Maryland. He is a member of the 872nd ordnance reserve unit and visited Marquette to confer with officials and coach Johnnie Druze. The scholarship covers full tuition fees books board and room.
