Washington civil service panel votes 6 to 3 to investigate political postmaster appointments and related pressure. Nearly 800 nominations await action as the committee approves a $33,000 inquiry into political activity, Hatch Act violations, and coercive fundraising by politicians.
Members of the church official board and various groups met to organize the annual canvas. Dinner for about 75 attendees was served by a women’s committee. A financial report showed most pledges voluntary and the church finances were in excellent condition. Dr. Fred E. Miller led the meeting.
May 1947 brought cooler, drier conditions than May 1945 with 1946 rainfall at 4.88 inches versus 4.43 inches in 1937. Record lows occurred mid month, while last year saw earlier cold snaps and higher highs. June began cool and wet, continuing unsettled weather.
Norman White announces changes to city wide recreation due to Bible school ending June 15. Activities shift to late afternoons at the Y M C A gym from 3 to 5 with swimming continuing, plus ping pong basketball tumbling and weightlifting. Evening tours and a twilight softball league are planned along with a June bean dinner to close the program.
The Rotary club adjourned after lunch to tour the Iowa Southern Utilities Company quarters. ISU force members guided the group through the building and its displays. Melvin Houck organized the inspection. guests included coach Robert J. Weber and Robert J. Shreiber of Falls Village, Conn.
Veterans administration training officer A A Hockey will be in Washington Thursday June 5 and Friday June 6. Trainees must have monthly work records signed and ready for delivery to the officer. Copies of programs should be available for review. Katters park in New York City covers twenty one acres and was once a select residential district.
Rainfall totaled .73 inches over Saturday night and Sunday morning to begin the month. Sunday’s high reached 70 degrees after Saturday’s 69.
Great Britain outlined a plan to make India a dominion this year and let Indians decide their own future. Mountbatten said unity is best but partition remains a possible alternative, with power transfer earlier than the June 1948 deadline. Nehru welcomed self determination. Jinnah urged Muslim League review. Attlee described a possible internal provincial reorganization and new assemblies for disputed Bengal and Punjab. Churchill called the plan hard to grasp and urged debate.
An army pilot said a structural failure caused two 250 gallon fuel tanks to drop from his P-86 jet fighter into the Pasadena business district. Miraculously no one was injured in the incident.
Washington city council voted to hire Clinton Hensel of Bloomfield, a certified public accountant, to audit the city’s books for the last two years and two months at 700 dollars, starting next week and to be finished by July. The audit covers until March 31, 1945, with state auditor staff behind on city work.
Bell and Gevock celebrate their first year as Firestone dealers in Washington and surrounding territory. Asiph Bell and Alex Gevocck bring seven years of tire experience, having taken over from J A Picken who held the Washington Firestone dealership. The shop at 204 South Iowa Ave was remodeled with new displays and a fresh sign, and a new service truck was purchased to reach farmers directly. Other helpers include Ruth Bell Bill Caldwell and Leo Beauchamp.
Vacation school at St James Catholic church ends with a Class of 20 children receiving their first Holy Communion at the 7 pm mass. Rev H J Corcoran presided. Parish school third and fourth graders joined in hymns during the Mass. Read names include John Baker Karla Bohr Francis Friese Celeste Peiffer and others.
About 40 town businesses hold cigarette licenses expiring July 1 and pay $75 yearly fees to the city. The council deferred action on a ten percent wage increase for city employees, to be studied by the finance committee. Garbage contract details were postponed, with plans to arrange fee-based collection soon.
About 1500 to 2000 people attended the opening of Iowa Southern Utilities new office and store in the Jungebluth building. Frank D B Miller noted strong interest in the modern facilities from the front entrance to the basement and upper floors. Visitors received carnations and Keady Kilowatt pins, and Andy Sheetz and Ida Burnson were among those honored with prizes and refreshments. The event featured tours, floral displays, and remarks by company and local officials including Washington and Grinnell representatives. Construction credits were listed from Boquim Schubert & Soresson to Carson Plumbing and Ure & Son, spanning nearly two years.
Mrs. Pamelia Lay of Iowa returned from New York City where she attended the International Association of Public Employment Service as one of four Iowa delegates. The May 26 to May 29 sessions at the Hotel Commodore drew about 750 delegates from North America and Canada.

Funeral services were held this afternoon at L A Jones funeral home with Dr Fred E Miller in charge. Pallbearers were Duane Shalla Dale Marek Urban Te Bockhorst Joe Kos Paul Kern and Harry Strabala. Burial followed in Richmond cemetery. Survivors include Mrs Mary Spevacek of Cedar Rapids.
Mrs Roy Fields secretary for the Washington county cancer campaign sent to the state headquarters a check for 5085.44 the net proceeds after expenses of 369.11. Washington county quota was 2540 based on population and the response more than doubled the goal reflecting credit upon the people. Mrs Josephine B Elder chaired the campaign and guided the effort.
The Senate approved a conference version of a Republican personal income tax cut. final 48 to 28 vote short of the two thirds needed to override a presidential veto. President Truman expected to veto. signing delayed until parchment form is completed. Speaker Martin away but aims to sign and send the measure tomorrow. Six Democrats and 42 Republicans voted yes. two Republicans joined 26 Democrats against.
Stephen and Horak move into newly redecorated suites in their jointly purchased building on East Washington Street. The layout includes a reception room, central workspace, Stephen’s optometry rooms, Horak’s insurance offices, and rear south windows with parking space. Their move improves space and business efficiency in a prime Washington location.
