A column notes 1,000 top Iowa high school students from about 40,000 pupils will gather in Iowa City for the annual brain derby. Over two days they will take two hour exams across 17 subjects to recall answers.
George Gibson of Iowa Falls narrowly avoided serious burns when his bed caught fire from a cigarette. He remains ill from smoke exposure and is under medical care.
During cleaning at a local church, workers discovered a sack holding three gallons of alcohol placed under the organ through a window. Police were notified and are investigating the incident as a potential trespass.
Rev. Giles Youngquist age 33 pastor of the Friends Church in Lynnville was killed when he fell against a chair in his home suffering a fractured neck believed caused by a stroke while walking across the front room.
A rural accident in Sioux City left Clarence Thomas Jr with a leg injury after his left foot became entangled in a shaft while he played near an elevator on his family farm.
The First Methodist church in Charles City will commemorate eighty years of activity with a Wednesday evening service on June 15. The congregation has worshiped in two buildings on the same site since its founding.

Dee Moines reports Congressman Edward Ebner of Iowa's first district backs a dual price system for farming. The plan would guarantee a minimum production cost for home use and a world price for exports, aiming for a sound, permanent farm program.
A 50 million dollar mortgage due May 15 1950 was filed with county records by Swift and Company First National Bank of Chicago Commerce Trust Company and Roy Osgood trustees. The instrument covers real estate in Muscatine and other towns as well as properties in 39 other states and the District of Columbia.
Ruth Humble 22 of Ottumwa died at the statehouse. Coroner William Carpenter cited a fractured skull from a 2 year old auto accident as the possible cause. The girl was thrown from the car and remained unconscious for 14 days.
A black cow, not a black cat, crossed the highway and was struck by Lessle Blair’s truck. The animal died and Blair’s vehicle was wrecked in the collision.
H M Havner filed a petition in district court alleging the Woodbury county grand jury probe into slot machines and races targets Attorney General Ed N OConnor and assistant Claire Hamilton. The affidavit accuses Walter Maley Joe Gagan and others of $5 000 weekly slot revenue and a Des Moines Kirkwood hotel payoff plan. Governor Herring testified before the grand jury as it continued session.
The French superliner Norman die on her maiden voyage broke transcontinental records by entering New York Harbor at 10 50 AM. Weighing 79289 tons and claiming world largest status, she reached St Ambrose lightship after a 4 days 6 hours 14 minutes Atlantic crossing at an average speed of 29.60 knots.
Mrs J Bo Ogden died this afternoon in a hospital in Iowa City after a week there. Her home was in Chicago and she was brought via Washington to Iowa City. The body will go to Sherman’s funeral home for plans. She was sister of Mrs Dick Malin, Mrs Newton O’Loughlin and Mrs H A Kealey of Washington.
Two Washington county youths, Charles Berdo and William McConnell, were among ten Iowa State college students elected to Alpha Zeta the national agricultural honorary fraternity. Election honors require top class standing, leadership and good character. Berdo, son of Mr and Mrs Boyd Berdo, will graduate at fall quarter end. McConnell, son of Mr and Mrs W H McConnell, 32% miles southeast of Washington, is a junior at Ames.
Charles C. Laffer age 63 of Des Moines was found dead near the Des Moines riverbank after an apparent overdose of a nerve medicine. A former Keokuk county sheriff and later state senator, he served 1915 to 1919 and worked as a motor vehicle department inspector from 1929 to 1982. Survived by wife Mollie Crawford and two daughters, with several siblings and a Grinnell mother. Burial arrangements disclosed after Dunn's funeral.
Federal agents widened a nationwide search for George Weyerhaeuser's kidnapers and turned to Volney Davis of the Alvin Karpis gang as the probable leader. Davis, arrested in Chicago after the ransom demand, was sent to St. Paul for Bremer kidnapping ties and may have posed as the gang’s advance man in Tacoma. Authorities warned Davis could be trapped as guards sealed routes by land and sea. a list of ransom notes used by the kidnappers was released.
A Hollywood columnist lauds Jack Garner as a common sense figure praised by Nick Longworth and Time magazine. The piece notes Garner’s influence and hints at price cutting and deceptive sales practices as public concerns.

Helen Coffey plans pipe organ study with her parents in Town City observing possible university attendance. Elinor Douglas and mother plan a De Moines summer apartment with brother C. C. Douglas. Mr and Mrs Ralph LeMoine and son expect to be here for the season.

Former president Herbert Hoover addressed Drake University graduates in Des Moines urging youth to guard against government interference and build a civilization shaped by forebearers labor. He praised Iowa farmers, contrasted farm self sufficiency with New Deal policies, and recalled rural life in Cedar County.

Washington county Iowa sees a wetter start to June with 1.55 inches from Saturday storms and May recording 6.70 inches. May also had rain on 18 days, contrasting last year’s drought. temperatures swung from 31 degrees to a high of 84, unlike 1954’s hotter spell.
Mrs Alex Miller released details for renewing drivers licenses in Des Moines on June 6 and in all counties on June 14. Applications may be obtained at the county sheriff and treasurer offices, mailed with twenty five cents, and must be sent before July 4. Renewals require current licenses or examination as directed by the Motor Vehicle Department.

Preparations are underway for the Washington county flower show at the United Presbyterian church tomorrow from 1 to 9 p m with free admission. The public is invited to view both commercial and private exhibits and bring flowers for entry, with reception times 8 30 to 11 a m. Iowa City judges will assess entries, and organizers warn that many have missed the show in past years.
A handheld torch used during repairs at the Odd Fellows hall set on a window ledge and caused a morning fire alarm. Those on the ground saw smoke and feared a blaze and reported it. There was no damage.
