Growing Chinese Cabbage In Containers And Small Plots

County Extension Director Jim Frier presents a column on growing Chinese cabbage in late summer and fall. Seed can be sown in July, with plants thinned or transplanted 12 to 14 inches apart. The crop tolerates frost and can be stored near freezing to extend use. Also covers container gardening options using tubs, pots, and boxes with a soil mix of topsoil, peat, and vermiculite or perlite. Recommends crops suitable for containers including tomatoes cucumbers beets kale lettuce onions peppers and more. Regular watering is essential in containers, especially in hot weather, and space constraints should not prevent home vegetable growing.
