Beef Cattle Numbers Lag Behind Population Trend
Beef cattle in the United States have risen for three years reaching 52.3 million head on January 1, an all time high, 26 percent above 1949. Slaughter arrivals fell in 1951, but higher herd sizes may push beef supplies up in 1952, risking price changes. Population grows about 2 percent annually, while cattle numbers outpace that growth. Cattlemen face potential demand weakness, range condition shocks, or feed concentrate shortages.
