Iowa index of prices received by farmers on May 15 1945 stands at 200 percent of the 1910 1914 era average. This is the highest since World War I and up from April. Prices received outpace prices paid with a 112 ratio a new high. Livestock feeding ratios shift as corn prices rise slightly while butterfat and egg poultry feed ratios edge up.
Washington public schools offer a free summer music school starting Monday June 4 at the high school for eight weeks. Instrumental class, private lessons, and a summer band are available but instrument shortages limit supplies for beginners. Loans or sales of band or orchestra instruments are welcome via Mr. Ralph Young or the high school office.
Marriage licenses were issued yesterday at the courthouse to Sylvanus Miller Jr and Eula Jean Figgins both of Kalona and to John Kenneth Patterson Jr and Frances JoAnn Ross both of Kalona.
The Bee Lines bus office announced the fire at the garage yesterday was insured. Cause undetermined, possible short circuit. A mechanic sparked the blaze while working on a bus, and flames could not be halted with hand extinguishers. One bus badly damaged. chassis may be usable. building above bus and a nearby stand suffered smoke and minor damage. Fireman Ed Sorrell injured by a hose incident to the response.
Will McCulley longtime Bethel resident dies at his Tingley Iowa home. Funeral services to be held in Tingley and body to be buried Monday at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington between two and three o clock. Survived by wife Lottie Morrow and sister Mrs Elizabeth Wright.
The county reports 39 marriage licenses issued by June 1, up from 31 at the same point last year. This indicates a stronger start to the marriage season with more couples applying early.
London reports quote Radio Luxembourg saying Pierre Laval committed suicide but others say he surrendered in Barcelona dispatches. Laval plans to return to France to face treason charges, possibly with Petain under trial. His party remains in Spain under strict supervision as he may be tried by the war crimes commission.

British forces confined French troops and possibly civilians to barracks in the Levant while British warships entered Beyrouth harbor. A Damascus dispatch said British troops were ready for action, surrounding French-held points to secure their stay.
A morning worship is scheduled at the Presbyterian church tomorrow. Members are invited to join the service and morning prayers.
Charles E. Strickler of Kalona died at Mercy hospital in Town City at 11 50 this morning from injuries sustained Memorial Day in a collision at the intersection of highway 22 and a Kalona street. Funeral services will be held at Yoder's funeral home in Kalona Monday at 2 30 p m. The accident involved a truck driven by Wayne Turnipseed of Wellman.
Albert David Dayton 83 of 608 North Iowa avenue died at 2 35 this morning at the county hospital after a two month illness. The funeral is set for Monday at two o clock at L A Jones funeral home with Rev Thomas Polk of the Christian church officiating. Burial will be in the Keota cemetery. Dayton a retired farmer lived in Washington 16 years, spent most of his life in Hedrick and two years in California. Born September 12 1861 in Washington county he was a son of David and Mary DeLong Dayton. He married Nellie DeLong at Keota May 29 1918. Surviving are his wife and one daughter Mrs Mabel Bender and a number of nieces and nephews.
Washington county rationing board warns residents who did not apply for home canning sugar by May 31 1945 that a new application period opens August 1 to August 31 1945.
The notice warns farmers who slaughter meat for sale or transfer that registration runs from April 3 to June 30, 1945. Meat cannot be sold or transferred after May 18 without registration and a Peril Number. Registration must be completed at the Washington Iowa office.
Eleven Washington county boys aged 18 registered with the selective service board in May for possible military service. London reports Berlin's new mayor Dr. Arthur Werner warned on air that 50 Nazi party members would be executed along with the offender for arson or violence against Soviet occupation forces. He said all who know of planned acts and fail to report them will be executed as well amid alleged Hitler Youth and Werewolf activity.
Washington county farmers must request their final 30 percent of tractor fuel in writing. A post card may be used. Regulations require the request in writing before fuel can be issued.
President Truman has been advised that the San Francisco conference will not end on June 6 as planned. The White House said the closing session date remains undecided and the president will address it if possible. Truman’s trip to San Francisco to attend the adjournment has been postponed.
Funeral services for Ralph E. Dougherty were held yesterday afternoon at L. A. Jones funeral home with Dr. F. W. Eastwood of New London presiding. Pallbearers included Frank Crone Fred L. Stewart C Wilsop George Breitenbach Ralph Waggoner and Ralph Pratt. He was interred in the Smouse Dougherty mausoleum at Elm Grove cemetery.
Acting Secretary of State Joseph C. Grew said the United States cannot assess reports of Russian vengeance in Berlin until U S representatives are admitted to the Soviet occupied German capital. He would not confirm or deny Senator Brewster's assertion that Russians are liquidating top German professionals to communize defeated Germany.

In Luzon and the Cagayan valley U S units advance, and Chennault notes Asia Japanese corridor effectively cut. Guam reports 200 American carrier planes hit southern Kyushu bases for two hours with bombing and strafing.
